How many times have you guys with high milage vehicles changed your timing belts. Starting milage you owned to end milage and how many belts?

None. I've sent 4 trucks over 250k. All were purchased with less than 60k. Current one was new and I am right at 200k.

Did your trucks have belts or chains?

No idea, never had to change one. All were GMC or Chevy.

Those most likely have chains.

I busted two chains in 22RE motors in the 80s and early 90s Toyotas. I knew two other guys that also busted them. All four between 189-191,000 miles. All were hound hunters with a lot of stop and start driving in the woods and bucking deep snow. I've known others with mostly highway miles to get a lot more than that without issue. But since that is an interference motor and you will likely bend valves when it breaks (I got lucky on the first one, it snapped when I hit the starter and didn't bend anything, 20 years later I forgot the lesson and broke one at about 30 mph). I always changed them around 150,000 after the first one, until twenty years later when I got another 89 and forgot my lesson. I've changed a few belts in the 3.4l Tacomas, but not as often as recommended, changed twice in the last one I owned that went 400,000 before I sold it. Those are not an interference motor, so if you break it all it does is leave you on the side of the road, it doesn't ruin anything. Never messed with them in any of my diesels. Currently have a 2.7l Toyota four cylinder with 160,000 on it and it is original, not sure if it is belt or chain, but my dad had one with 427,000 on it when he sold it and it had never been changed.

2001 Ford Ranger with the 4 Liter engine. I got 330,000 miles out of it before the timing chain gave out.

I replaced the belt on my little honda at 205k, and it definitely needed it-all cracked and starting to shred. The wifey's van (Toyota Sienna) got one at 80k when a idler pulley siezed. Luckily it made it into the driveway without snapping the belt, but it was a shredding stinking mess.

When I bought my 77F150, it had an older but non-orginal 302 with the nylon-geared timing chain. It was so sloppy that I could pick the chain op off the cam gear and move it over one tooth. It apparently had done it itself, it was off by four teeth already.

FYI

For those reading this thread and maybe not having much mechanical skills , it is important to know if your vehicle has an interference engine -or- a non- interference engine.

Complete list -

Interference engines are the ones that can have catastrophic failure if the timing belt breaks while the engine is running.

LOL. THIS is why I run toyotas. Mine with an accumulated mileage of 300,00. 2 tacomas. Never had to replace timing belt. Knew a guy that in 91 had a 71 toyota never changed oil or serviced in any way since bought new. ----- it would start and run when nothing else would

Two VW diesels and Honda van. 700K total miles amongst the three. Changed every 100K along with belts/tensioner/pulleys/water pump. Cheap maintenance.

Don’t think I ever owned a vehicle with a timing belt.
