That was great. Your son just manhandled him.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Exactly, no really any skill just put all that wood splitting, fire wood chucking, and packing, feed, hay, 5gal buckets of water, and wood muscle to good use and didn't back off or let up. The boy is going to be built just like his dad. Short and stocky. Wide shoulders thick chest and thick legs. His older brother is built like my grandfather and wife's dad tall, lean. Honestly I'm not sure he has not gotten a touch taller than me allready at 13. Not a big accomplishment since I'm only 5'8"

Now they need to build skill and techniques

Wrestling was mandatory for my sons starting at 5 years old. It develops so many life skills (including being able to handle yourself off the mat). One still in little league and one in high school now.

I hope your son has a great season!

P.S. Stay chill at tournaments. The adrenaline and emotion can be a lot for new wrestling dads. The wrestling moms are even worse!

I think the parents will be the hardest thing to deal with from what I saw and heard last night.

This is just the start to get them interested. My oldest is right at being to old for this group but likes to practice with them. So I think they will be getting into a boxing gym and jiu-jitsu if I can find good ones and it should build them into well rounded individuals.

I still coach my younger son some but have much more fun being spectator Dad. My sons enjoy it more too when I'm not on the mat. They already have enough pressure on them.

My advice to all new parents is sit by yourself. Stay calm. None of what is happening on the mat or stands is about you. I give that speech about 20 times a season.

And, they get better and learn so much by losing, so get very comfortable with that! Be patient. At some point the skill bulb just flashes on and their technique starts getting better and better.

Wrestling is a religion here. I thought all of y'all play basketball up there????

I’ve seen some small guys take down some “jocks” before. All in technique and how to use the opponents “strengths” to their advantage. It’s quite humbling when you’re on the receiving end of it, lol! When it comes to Jujitsu, I’ve seen small women have a muscle bound guy in tears before he’d submit.

Always more fun to begin a sport with a win. Over my 40 years of coaching wrestling, the kids I admired most were the ones who kept at it in spite of nearly always losing. Eventually the light bulb clicked on and success followed. Those kids learned the most about themselves and were always showed the most sportsmanship when they started winning.

Every one keeps mentioning "mat", but there was no mat. What gives with that?

Well done.

Yes' Sir...And kudos to you for being there for those young men. Lot's of life lessons instilled early on the mat.

I played football, and baseball in High School. The only reason I didn't wrestle was because it interfered with trapping season.
My 10th grade football coach also coached wrestling. He tried and tried to recruit me, but I finally had to tell him no, and that it was due to trapping season. I have never seen a man so disappointed before or since. This was 49 years ago.
I have no regrets.
