Paul, as a life long U.P. resident I can relate to what you are saying. When I was a kid it was a family event to go out and try to find the perfect tree. We always preferred a balsam because of the wonderful odor.

My grandmother would just snap a branch off a spruce and jam it into a flower pot, couple ribbons and done!!! the original Charlie Brown tree....
