In my first years trapping I was very apprehensive about asking. Now I try to be bolder and have enough to wet my whistle. I am limited this year on time so no long lining but I find the Onx app helped

I get land but like out of 20 people 2 or so say yes 8 say they have trappers already the rest you can’t find the right person like the dad owns the land but the sons decide who get permission or I have to get ahold or the renter who in my instance never give me the time of day but when I get a yes there cool and im able to come back year after year

Very very hard here. City deer hunters have everything around leased up and they don’t want anyone around before or after deer season. There are tons of other trappers all around. There’s several groups of coyote dog runners all around me. Very very hard to get permission to hunt for anything, Coon, squirrel, rabbit. Etc. a lot of hunters around here have just gave up and don’t hunt anymore because of all the aggravation of it. I’ve lost a lot of ground the past 5 or 6 years and have thought about going out and trying to get some new land but I haven’t cause I dread it so bad, it just isn’t worth it.

Anyone that owns a gun and votes democrat deserves to have there gun taken, cause they truly are too stupid to own a gun.

I can think of twice in my life I've trapped private ground. When I was in high school I used to beaver trap this place, when I first started I actually was just asking for a place to park and walk onto the public, but they had beavers flooding their yard and asked me to trap them. Then I trapped wolves on a private ranch a couple years ago, asked some other places around there for permission to go after that pack, but some had other trappers and some just wouldn't give permission. Otherwise it has never been worth the hassle and there is plenty of public land without the hassle. Of course out west corporate timber land has always been considered public, but the eastern attitudes are starting to invade and it wouldn't surprise me if they start trying to charge to trap on their ground. They have already tried it for hunting or for access in general. And our fish and game is all for it, they are actually paying some the timber companies for "sportsmans access" while at the same time they are "partnering" with them to restrict access more than it has ever been.

It can be an all or none deal when you are doing coyote control. If you get your foot in the door the word spreads quickly.

Hardest part here is finding who actually owns the land to get in contact with. Very rarely do you get a no to free trapping unless someone else is already trapping that property.

I work for alot of the local farmers -- they usually find me. If they don't bring it up I will ask - alot easier to ask when you are already on their place for another reason. Very few refusals.

I haven't asked for permission since my college days when I was chasing big money fur.... (nutria). In Oregon all navigable river beds are public up to the mean high water mark. No permission needed to boat trap.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

With fur prices the way they are I don’t like trapping unless they are paying me. I’m going to do a little river trapping to secure some cat bait, if I can get freed up some.

I have to turn people down. In the three states I run traps if you you present yourself as a professional in appearance, attitude and talk, you are hired. When you get your foot in the door and they see you are conducting yourself accordingly everyone around there will beg you to come trap their land. Some of the little non written rules I go by:

1. Always be a professional with anyone I'm talking to. Do not talk about the bad things about trapping.

2. Ask where I can't trap and are there any species they don't want trapped.

3. During deer and duck season what areas can you trap without disturping the hunters. Some areas I can trap the weekdays but not the weekends, and adjust accordingly.

4.Get specifics and dates when they are running deer, hog or rabbit dogs. I refuse to trap a area that they are running dogs. You will be surprise how many clients I get when I talk to a truck of dog hunters and let them know there is no traps in the area they are running.

5. Some clients ask for a hide from a animal, I make sure I give them the best one I catch.

Its a amazing how fast in the South you will get places to trap. This year I have two places I trap that they told me its okay to put up a stand and feeder, I did not ask them. One guy lets me use his box stand anytime I want due to removing a truck load of coons from his land.
