I agree with Yes Sir. If I'm going past a set anyways, I'll leave it but will pull it if I have to treck out to just that set. Experience will help answer that question for you.

If I think I have a good location and it isn't out of my way, I will leave it sit until I pick up the entire line. I remember one huge tom that got into a set that had laid there for about 60 days.
That doesn't always happen, but having a lot of good sets out produce the big toms when they finally start moving. They break old patterns and cover new ground at that time of year so I don't need a bunch of gear hanging in a shed somewhere.

What type of canine? I've never trapped foxes, but I assume they have a smaller range and will come by more frequently than coyotes. Coyotes have a smaller range and will come by more frequently than wolves. I've caught both wolves and coyotes on the first check, but our population isn't as dense as most areas back east so if I'm setting on fresh sign I don't expect to have anything the first few days. For wolves it is usually a couple weeks to over a month before they come back through (I've found that some places, some packs, and some times of year, this can be much more frequent) and if they decide to cross a couple hundred yards from where they did last time, or are simply on a mission and not investigating anything, it is going to be that long again before they come back through. Coyotes is usually between one and two weeks here before they come back, but there are often others that will come through in between times. Longest I have ever left a coyote set and caught a coyote was all winter, I set a trap just down the road from the house in late fall. I was driving by it every day and could see it from the pickup. Ground froze hard so it would be a real pain to pull the earth anchor before it snowed. Snowed 3-4 feet over it and I just left it. Come March it melted off and I was going to pull it but hadn't got around to it. Zero maintenance. Went by one morning and glanced at it, same as always, came back about 11:00 AM and there was a big dog coyote bouncing.
I've caught wolves in traps that have been set for three months, but they were maintianed and relured at least once a month. I will sometimes squirt urine on a set more often, especially if I am going by within reach of it, I use urine on the majority of sets, but not all.
That being said, if a set is out of the way and I'm not seeing sign of the target animals using the area within a reasonable time (reasonable depending on what the target animal is and how long I expect it to take for them to come back) I will end up pulling it. Weather and other circumstances may cause me to pull sooner if it either becomes too maintenance intensive or it causes the target animals to change their travel routes.

Around here if I set out traps and leave them awhile, 2/3 of the catch will be in the first 5 days and at least half in the first three. If your fur trapping, got a lot of country to trap, a week is plenty long enough.

If your not catching, and you know coyotes have found your sets, try different stuff. one new thing at a time.

Pull the trap and within days there'll be tracks all over it has been my experience.
There comes a point liberalism has gone too far, we're past that point.
