I am following your tan recipe . The strips give alkalinity and PH . Your instructions are for between 1 & 2 PH . This hot tub test bottle and strips show PH starting at 6.2 to 9.0 The color after I lip is a lighter color than 6.2 and above the 6.2 the colors get darker so I assume the PH is less than 6.2 but I do not see any way to tell what the lower number is ? The grid for alkalinity starts at 0 (olive green ) and gets a darker green from 40 thru 120 . The test strip shows for the alk is slightly darker green than the olive green for 0 .Appears that the alk is slightly more than 0 .Is this OK .

I believe you are greatly confused as to what the PH scale is. You need to do some research on PH .

Why do you say that? The PH scale goes from 0-14, however, the test strips he bought for testing the PH in hotubs only test from 6.2-9.0.

I don't think he sounds that confused, I think he just needs to order some different litmus paper.

This is why I think he is confused.
The PH scale goes from 0 to 14.

Plus he asks if he is testing for PH or alkalinity. That question makes no sense.

You need a PH meter or Full Scale PH paper. The Hot Tub paper did not work for me when I tried tanning . Good Luck.

Sure it does. They are two different measures. PH is a measurement of the acidity of the solution. Alkalinity is a measurement of how likely the PH is to change. The range for testing for alkalinity is 0-100 and is measured in ppm.

I thought alkalinity was the opposite of acidic 1 thru 6 being acidic. Seven being neutral. Eight to 14 being alkaline. Same measurement different end of the scale.

[Linked Image] Trying to upload picture of the container with the test strips .I think the strips I bought are not going to work to read PH below 6.2 . The ones I got are for hot tubs. $13 bucks down the drain !

F&T sells the litmus paper you need. It's in the tanning supply section.

Your pickle should be between 1 and no higher than 2

Your tan should be 4 to 4.5
Looks like you need to adjust both with a little acidity.
Did you leave some soap in the pelts, soap is alkali and will bugger up the ph.
