The deer are still working them over. They still act like they are growing and the deer are eating the greens and the turnips. It looks like hogs have been in them. But it's all deer.

This coming year will be my first time putting in food plots.
Do you till, or disk your food plot?
I will be starting with one area that is surrounded with trees, and is about 150’ x 600’. This area has been mowed only over the years.
My other area will be a corner of a hay field that has poor yield on hay. It is very thin as far as grass.
I plan on getting several soil tests done to start. Then go from there.

If your mind draws a blank, turn off the sound, because ya can't learn a thing if you're doin all the talkin

This area was a soybean food plot that died out after planting due to the drought, and I just used a handheld broadcast spreader to spread the turnip seeds. They are tiny. The ground was sprayed in the spring with roundup and 2-4-D as a burn down and then the beans were no-tilled in with a drill. I didn't do anything other than spread the turnip seed on July 25th and then we got some rain. Part of this area is gravely and poor ground, the turnips don't seem to care. I think they will grow no matter what you do.

My turnips will not make a turnip bigger than a quarter. Deer dont mess with my turnips - leaf or root. Hogs wont even eat them here. Me and the wife like them, though

Two different types of Turnip Seed

One produces greens only

Other is for the bulbs and tops

You have to be sure of which you buy

Must be our environment, too far South maybe? I turkey hunted a place that had a good size plot of them…nothing had touched them either. And they had hogs as well. Now plant a field of chufa and you’ll need a wall to keep the critters out!

They are good cut up and mixed in with a salad for a crisp crunch. We have eaten them all kinds of ways, even cooked and mashed like potatoes with a spicy kick.

Several different cultivars and strains of turnip.

The classic root turnip is Purple Top, classic for greens is Seven Top. The former is good for both greens and root but to produce the best roots plant early and thin aggressively. Once the root is thumb sized there shouldn't be another plant withing six inches then thin every other one as they get up to golf ball size. Same for rutabaga as they are even worse to stunt if crowded. The latter, Seven Top, produces a woody inedible root and also benefits from thinning but not to the degree as root turnips. Another good mild root turnip is Shogoin white turnip.

The crowded parts where I walked slower and hosed on too much seed were a preferred area. They pulled and ate the hole plant creating the big bare spots. These were purple top turnips.
