I caught a muskrat in a 330 in an otter set and it was laying on the bottom and the crawdads ate all the skin off its head yesterday. Things must be like piranha!

Funny thing....a piranha was actually caught on hook and line a few years back about 3 miles upstream of where this happened. They figured an aquarium release.

I would think the crayfish would be sedentary,,,,, unless you are trapping a tributary from a hot spring.

Plus there would have to be a army of them to do that, even if you a were doing a month plus soak.

I thought i remembered in an earlier classic post that it was a coin toss between crawdads and water shrews? But never did rule out zombie beaver either..

It gets a lot colder here in MN and snappers survive just fine. Considered an invasive species there? Here they are starting to consider them endangered, which is a joke.

I have had this in varying degrees over the years. I’m guessing Turtle or Water Shrews. Not sure crawdads could do that overnight, or couple nights. Also, I would think a few crawdads would still be attached occasionally, but they never are. Even during night checks.

turtles. Had a ditch full of muskrats one time MANY years ago . Halp of them had feet and most of the tails gone. Made a pocket set using part of one for bait. Caught 3 turtles in 3 nights. After that no more chewed on rats.

Had one this spring, chewed a hole dead center in the back. Problem beaver wasn't completely submerged. I have no idea what it was.

Might have to submerge a 330 with a big chunk of beaver slivered onto the trigger wires. It would be a hoot to catch a snapper here in Oregon.

there has only been one record for Manitoba in the 1930 when they railed hay in for the drought from Kansas

Could be a bird of prey like a hawk or eagle.
Ravens will attack a nuisance beaver floating in open water some times.
If they are belly up they can open the skin,if they are belly down they pluck all the fur off trying.
See tons of fur floating all around the plucked beaver.

Skinned that beaver tonight. Kind of interesting that whatever it was that chewed it up (thinking turtle now) completely ate up the oil sacs oil and all. Munched up some of the castor too.
