Brothers turnips are starting to make.
Tops burned a bit but never froze very deep.
Mild weather has them growing again. Solid too !

We just harvested a bunch the other day too! Had elk steaks and roasted roots from the garden last night. We found that if we leave certain roots in the ground in the greenhouse we can harvest super late. Just takes a little planning getting the winter crop growing in the green house

My wife made a Shepards pie the other night with ground antelope and mashed turnips on top. Was quite the meal.

Friend planted 50 lbs of purple top seed in food plots. That is a lot of turnips.

Do you turn sheep and cows in to them ? i have trouble liking them . Seem hot or bitter just me I guess .I seeded the ground with them after I cut grain hay off .Sheep ate them below the ground .

Funny you mentioned parsnips, I just dug the last four parsnips out of our garden on Christmas Eve day. They should have been frozen in with a foot of snow on them by now!

I'm glad you did !
They are tricky to grow, tried several times with no luck. Very slow to germinate.
My dad had no problem, started the seeds 10 days or so under a board.
I miss them, they are so good. And are stupid expensive in the stores here.
Thanks

Root vegetables , when mulched to protect them from freezing , will have a lot better taste to them.
Parsnips and carrots will be sweeter , turnips will be milder.
Potatoes never tried them , but think they would rot , beets isn't one I've tried , but did leave some in the ground over winter.
What the rabbits didn't eat, topped out and went to seed.
Broccoli , Brussel sprots , will over winter , I've harvested them in March.
That's not every year , but they are still good in December and January most times.
Cauliflower , is done the first frost , cabbage can take a few frosts , you just need to peel off the out side leaves , sometimes there's not a lot left.

A guy in my Beagle Club plants Turnips around the running pens, and they're handy to yank up, peal the hide off, and eat them out of hand.
