I have found two this year while out and about which is about what I average. Does anyone else come across them?

I don't believe I ever have, other than a few duck and goose bands from harvested birds

That's way cool. In past years I have put out thousands, but rarely do I find dead ones. I assume you report all those?

Was on a botulism die back pick-up and came across hundred of ducks bands. But could not keep them....bio was keeping his winter work protected.

About 25 years ago, a decomposed raptor carcass was brought to me by a citizen that found the rotted bird on a private pond dam. It had a large plastic band on its leg. I called and learned that it was an immature bald eagle that was injured, rehabilitated, and released...in Kansas.

It made it to southern Georgia. It was too dry rotted to determine cause of death.

I've picked up a couple goose neck bands laying on the shoreline, those things are the kiss of death to a goose..

I found a banded adult bald eagle laying dead in shallow water of a local lake. Contacted local DNR wildlife biologist and we travelled back to the site to recover the eagle. This was in spring 2006 just after ice out. Biologist called back with exciting news that he himself banded the fledgling eagle in late spring 1975. The biologist had started his job a month or two earlier. (new guy had to climb the tall nest tree to earn their stripes!)
He also stated that the eagle was 31 years old when it died which is the oldest aged documented wild eagle in Wisconsin. As a final note, the DNR biologist retired shortly after, completing 31 year career!

Found two bands on Canada geese washed up on the shores of lake Erie in my life. Both birds had been dead quite some time and half covered with sand

Found a goose once that had one, forget the age but it was an older local bird.

I am pretty sure it was a seagull but a predator had it pretty well gone when I found it. Reporting them electronically is super easy these days. You can even use Google maps to pinpoint exact locations where it was found. It takes about five minutes to do. The one I found earlier this summer was an immature seagull that was banded in Door County and was located in downtown Green Bay.

Last year, I came across a dead Canadian goose that was part of a pair I had been watching for a good decade. They were always hanging out in roughly the same area. I called the tag in and they had been tagged 12 years prior about 16 miles south of Green Bay. The DNR said it was a pretty old bird.

Moral of the story - check those dead birds out.

Gulls have webbed feet. That does not look webbed to me.

the guess is pigeon feet which lines up with the plastic band . The band has to be reported the US Agriculture not Fish and Wildlife office.
when they are used in racing they all have to be reported

the results you get back may sound like a lead balloon landing

Good Catch. It is a pigeon band of some sort. They apparently don't keep their data base very exact as the guy I called hasn't been involved for 10 years. He gave me another number to call.

My son found one around the leg of a dove he shot!

Found this one 2 years ago while metal detecting and posted it on here. Turned out to be from a wood duck banded in 1983.
