We purchased a new property last year. It was vacant for 2 years before we bought it. The 4 acre pond has a rip rap bank completely around the pond. In areas, it is about 6’ wide at full level. I am wanting to know if any T-Man members have experience with herbicides, that are safe for fish. For now, I have been weed whacking out spots to fish from, but that is an endless task! I have a pond management guy on board for this coming spring, but I only want them to help with aquatic weeds and fish population control. So, do any of you spray weeds at a ponds edge, and if so, what do you use as a herbicide? ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2023/12/full-24554-202040-img_1149.jpeg) This aerial photo was taken before the weeds grew up around the pond edge. The pond perimeter is right at .35 miles, so it is way too much for me to go at with a weed eater! Lol

The weeds are not in the water, but in the rock edge protection. Is Glyphosate safe for fish, and people eating the fish?

I have weed burners, and may do that. I just don’t want to cause the fire department a trip to my house. If they were burned, it would be much easier to spray the new growth. Thanks Cooncuff, I will check that out!

We do fish from a boat also, but I need to get a little bit bigger boat. The 1236 that we use just kills my back sitting to low, and it would be too tippy if a higher seat was used! The youngsters love it though. I have been contemplating burning as you said, but they would just come back really quick. I also, am leary of chemicals, because the little ones swim in the pond!

if you have a lot of large tall growth right now it needs to get cut and or burned or it will just be in the way of any other solution
mow as close as you can to the riprap make sure that gets blown away
weed whack fire breaks at the 4 corners for about 25 feet
get help and burn a side at a time when there is no wind and it has not been too dry
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

hrdtoflw.... many government agencies use Aquaneat and they have a call the pros number if you have any questions. Sounds pricey but it's a comcentrate and mixed it will make like 15 gallons so actually it's fairly reasonable. The DNR told me to use it on my pond so doe what it's worth...Mark

I miss the good ole American sickle-bar. That's what I used BEFORE I applied glyphosate. Knock.it down, rake it out/ up. Wait for new growth, then apply midmorning on a hot, sunny, WINDLESS day. Plus, didn't have rocks around ponds, lol

4 acres? What’s the depth on average? Reason I’m asking is you can get the PPM IF you were dumping the chemicals straight into the water Which you won’t be . If you take a hot day and no rain for 3 days I’d bet it won’t hurt to use any herbicide. Don’t have to use much to kill it. 1 oz per gallon in a spray. Then diluted by estimated gallons in pond. Doubt you will be pushing contamination limits I really don’t have any clue what the average depth would be. About 20’ in the deepest area. The pond was built with a purpose in mind. The area around the dock is shallow, for bluegill beds. Other areas have flats of varying depths with brush piles for the fish, and minnows to hide. The water clarity is clear as seen in the photo. Not a good place to hide a body, due to the entire bottom being visible on google earth! Lol My goal is to turn this into a great fishing hole. There are too many small bass, with a few 11” to 12” crappie. The conservation dept. told me not to remove bass, until I know more about the crappie. Crappie spawn about a month before the bass, then the bass clean up the crappie fry. In all reality, crappie should have never been put in this pond, and I will remove them as I catch them!
