I take 10 milligrams a day and have for about 30 years. I don't think it has ever bothered me. Now that I am retired and losing weight I hope to get off it.

About 2 years ago my doctor told me I had high blood pressure. He prescribed a low dose (5 mg daily) of Lisinopril. Over time I slowly had an increase in pain in my right kidney. For a while it was only when I lay down in bed, then gradually started to hurt in the day while working. I went to a urologist and he did ultrasound, cat scan, blood tests etc all came out negative. He said it was something in my diet so one by one I cut from my diet coffee, carbonated drinks like soda, chocolate, cranberry sauce, literally anything I could think of that might cause this kidney pain. The pain got worse and worse. Christmas day it felt like my kidneys were going to split open. I was so sick I forgot to take that Lisinopril pill Christmas morning. By that night I began to feel better. I have not taken that pill since and today (5 days later) I feel 100%. Last 2 nights I have slept like a baby. SO if you are taking this drug and your kidneys hurt this is your warning. If you look up Lisinopril on the net you will see it says it is good for the kidneys, that is not always so. Eric I recently (Oct.) woke up at about 5:15am with a HUGELY swollen bottom lip. I was fine when I went to sleep. Scared the fecal out of me. Looked it up quick online and they said to get to the ER as it could be either a medication reaction or insect bite but it could be real bad. First question they asked was "are you takng any blood pressure meds?". I said yeah, 10mg of Lisinopril. They immediately said O.K., yeah that's no doubt the cause. I said I'd been taking it for 4 year and they said it doesn't matter it can happen at ANY time no matter how long you've been taking it. I had to hang around for 6 hours for them to monitor me to make sure it didn't worsen then they told me no more Lisinopril and switched me to Amlodipine. The condition is called Angioedema. And it can be fatal. Usually the tongue swells up to fill your mouth and your throat closes up. I got REALLY LUCKY that night.

Tommyran,
the same thing happened to a friend of mine except it WAS his tongue that swelled. Drs. told him if he'd waited another 30 minutes to get there, he'd be dead. Scary stuff indeed. Glad he got there in time.

It's pretty disappointing that a lot (maybe most) doctors don't really know too much. You really have to do a lot of your own research and get second and third opinions.

It amazes me that the medical professionals have not figured out that there is sometimes disturbingly wrong when they are prescribing additional drugs to counteract the negative effects of the drugs they're prescribing to treat conditions that fall outside some established limit.
My Dr. wanted to start me on a statin when one of my cholesterol numbers floated one point higher than some limit. I'll be looking for a different Dr. Are their any old time country doctors anymore?
