k snow OP trapper K Joined: Oct 2009 east central WI	A friend gave me this trap today. He picked it up at an auction near Eau Claire, WI. I am thinking blacksmith made, relatively old. I believe it's missing a spring. And I don't think the clinched horseshoe nails were the original method of holding in the jaw posts.

roztocki trapper R Joined: Sep 2013 ne iowa	Blacksmith hand forged trap for sure. Pretty positive the wedge locking in the jaw posts are correct as I have had several forged traps with the same arrangement.

Springs were what made Sewell Newhouse made traps so popular. To my knowledge he never taught anyone else how he did it. My main guess at 2 springs was I see no signs of chain attachment anywhere on the trap as it is. I would guess the chain would have been swiveled off the now missing second spring.
