.223 5.56 is a popular round in the west as are most flat shooting smaller calibers with all the open shooting. One of the first things I noticed years ago when I moved out here was the difference in calibers the stores offered in the sale papers back then.

New York Attorney General Letitia James led a multi-state coalition of 20 attorneys general calling on the Biden administration to halt the sale of 5.56 caliber ammunition to civilians by the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant

The AGs stated in a Jan. 9 letter to the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. “We ask your Office to conduct an investigation into the contracting processes that led to this situation, and to take action to ensure that military-grade and military-subsidized ammunition stays out of civilian hands.”

The letter was signed by AGs from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington

All signatories expressed their desire to restrict civilian access to ammunition commonly used in semi-automatic AR-15-style rifles

Depending on the load you can do a lot of things with it. From get off my lawn stuff to evaporating chipmunks right up to putting venison and pork in the freezer. Is it the pest for any of those things. Probably not, but it works none the less. A bonus it that a lot of politicritters hate it and that alone is a darn good reason to have lots of it at hand.
History will probably account it to have been used to get the con out of congress.

19 states out of 50. All blue states with big blue crime ridden cities.
ARs are not what's killing the feral human beings in their cities, it's drug sellers/users with handguns; but yet, they're going after ARs.
I'm all for banning drugs and leaving the guns alone.........Oh wait.............

I'm surprised Vermont is in there. I know that's Bernie Sanders turf but, lots of hunters there and they were one of the first to permit conceal carry.

Interesting

Politicritters are scared of the black rifles for real reasons. They want to do things that they just cant with those thing still around in numbers. They don't give the south end of a north facing rat about crime or anyone or anything else but themselves.

22 lr good to 100-150 yds. Cheap ammo light can carry a lot. 30-06 will reach out and touch something but ammo is much heavier expensive and recoil is heavy. 5.56 is the compromise of the two.

ahh but can you build one
they are not that hard I am almost certain I could make one out of a wooden block if I had the barrel and small parts which you probably can still buy.

that is actually a some day project to cut a 10/22 receiver from wood and fire it

Everyone should have .223, 9MM, .45, 7.62X39 12Ga and .22 ammo on hand. And a lot of rope and a list to scratch off as they go when things get rough.
