Buddy of mine painted water spots on hood of his truck. The Late owner of RJ Corman railroad stopped beside him in Lexington Ky and asked who did it. He said he did. Hired him thru the truck window put him in charge of paint crew. If you ever see any of their vehicles they all look brand new. Company policy if damage are scratches they get repainted. Got a crew traveling all across US does that only.

Wouldn't you use some type of a stencil to trace out design then do the painting?

Back in the eighties when I raced boats, we would get a sign painter to put our numbers on as well as the boat name across the deck. He made a paper stencil for the numbers that had little perforations from a dress marking wheel on the outlines of the numbers. He taped it where the numbers went and used a powder puff over it, then pulled it off and the powder made little marks to guide his free hand painting. It was fun to watch him work. He had to paint, "Smoke On The Water" twice because I crashed the first one and destroyed it.

We had a guy at the caddy dealer I worked at that would hand stripe them. He'd lay a piece of tape to follow with his fingers for the long straight ones. SID*DID*IT was his signature, painted in between the two lines.

At the Harley parties, there's a pin-striper (there's ONE p in that word, get your mind out of the gutter) that will do do demos on a fairing, then wipe the whole thing off and redo it. All day, day after day. Same fairing, different stripe patterns every time.

My old truck had them. Sure got teased when my coworkers saw them. Pressure washed em off the next day, but too late. Takes a long time for them to forget.

A guy in Denmark Iowa used to freehand a pattern that had Humming birds, caterpillars, and butterflies with grape vines. He did the whole school bus that was white and the rest was green. He used an air brush. It was amazing to watch him,

I was privileged to grow up where I did. Neighbors dad was best friend with a great pin striper who mainly did Harleys and cars especially lowriders. He would always pinstripe the girls bicycles and then cars. He preferred doing it freehand but some complex lowrider designs made it necessary for tape.
Steady hands and a limp wrist was his 2 biggest tips for me. Told me practice calligraphy of all styles first. Lost contact with him as life went on. Still talk to 1 of the daughters.

Had my first real welding truck pin striped back in 83. At first I thought the back was too gaudy, but it grew on me! Was on that truck till I closed the shop and sold the truck. It stays well, even without the clear coat!
