As far as weather is concerned some depends on where. Great for outdoor activities even if it’s in NY. Before anyone trashes the Adirondacks bear in mind not all of NY is the same. On my property I have trapped rats, beaver, mink, grey Fox, yotes, raccoons, weasels, bobcat, and fisher. Parts of the A. also have marten.
Good luck. Ask anything. I know nothing about everything.

Trappergirl, I live between the Adirondacks and Tug Hill plateau in the black river valley. I have spent plenty of time in both places, my first love would be the Adirondacks. Where about an are you moving. Pm me if you don’t want to post it on open forum.

Lots of touristy vacation resources along NYS Route #3
NYS Route #28, NYS Route #30, & Interstate I-87.

If you get off the main drags, you'll find plenty of
Forest Preserve, Wild Forests,
Forever Wild Wilderness tracts and other
public land classifications with a variety of
land use rules & restrictions.

It's a very lightly populated region but is crowded
with summer tourists. Much of the areas around the inland
lakes are the playgrounds for the rich.

Lots of private land owned by timber companies
but also huge tracts of State owned land open
to the public but with sometimes very restrictive access rules

Contact the NYS DEC, the Adirondack Park Agency,
or the Adirondack Counties of Hamilton, Essex, Herkimer,
St. Lawrence, Lewis, Franklin, & Warren for more information.

I have a camp in Schroon Lake , Essex county , NY
In the adirondak mountains ..

We use it year round for hunting / fishing / trapping
We especially hunt snowshoe rabbits with our beagles, in winter months and ice fish on Schroon lake ..
My camp is up in the woods off Hoffman Road , not far from Schroon for groceries/beer :-)
We ride our snowmobiles to town on groomed trails ..
great get away and taxes aren't too bad ..
life is good ...:-))

I live on the edge of rhe adirondacks. For pure beauty they are outstanding, Walleyed listed a lot of attributes. Some of the negatives are winters can be rough, state government is driving folks out of the state, more and more regulations, salaries are lower, and we have black flies that bite in the spring.

I have worked , hunted , fished and trapped in the ADKs for many years, if you get away from the touristo traps like Old Forge, Lake Placid etc., there are few places better for a all around outdoor oriented person. Largest state park in the lower 48, with over 6 million acres, 3 million +- public land and 100’s of thousands of private acres with conservation easements allowing public use. The ADKs are the oldest mountain range in the world, and will be little changed when the Rockies have eroded away. Brook trout fishing in remote lakes and ponds is excellent, and as others have mentioned many species of fur bearers to trap. And Marten are the only species of fur bearers that have a bag limit.

Even though it is within driving distance of several million city slickers, get 1/10 of a mile off any trail or road and you will have privacy . I fished 8 different remote lakes and ponds last year and never saw another fisherman .

The down side is it is governed ,like all of NY State, by NYC and Albany, tax and spend Democrats and inside the Adirondack Park by the Adirondack Park Agency.

Lets not forget the deer flies & horse flies plague that torments hikers
all summer long on the Northville-Lake Placid Trail.

Summer of 1974 in July, I was hiking up over Mount Sabattis
between Terrell Pond & Long Lake and headed for the Cold River/
Duck Hole region with my fellow boy scouts

Those deer/horse flies were so vicious they were draining us of our blood.

Had I not had one of those beekeepers head nets I would have surely
been bled dry, Oil of citronella helped too !!!

Black flies, indeed !!! laugh

I have lived in NY my entire life and consider the Adirondacks one the most beautiful places in the country. That being said it isn't for everyone.
Whether someone likes or not would depend on your lifestyle and how you want to live.
It has something for everybody but can be quite harsh at times weatherwise.
As mentioned, the deer flies and black flies and be unbearable at times and conveniences can be a challenge.
It is definitely an area for people that are resourceful and have the ability to fend for themselves.
It is a place one would either love or hate.
If possible, I would recommend a visit.
It is definitely a beautiful place but there are so many differences between each region.

We usta' deer hunt and I trapped for 2 years in the early 1980's out of the lean-to on Calkins Creek just off of Cold River. Beautiful country, boated in and then Long Lake froze over, took us 2 days to drag boat (with traps, gear and a buck in it) over the ice back to launch site. Ah, to be young and do it again!

Did you make a lean-to or did you stay in THE lean-to on Calkins Creek? You weren't too far from where the Hermit Noah John Rondeau lived on Cold River. http://www.noahjohnrondeau.com

For the black flies we put a drop of diesel fuel on the ball of our cap, worked good

Concerning the Rocky Mountains, they are still growing and the Appalachians are still shrinking. I doubt the ADK’s will outlast the Rockies.

Didn’t mean to hurt your feelings about the Rockies, but Just because you doubt it, it is still true. The ADKs are growing as well at a rate of .5” - 1”+ annually. and are made of very hard rock over 1 billion years old.
