I dont know about what state - but I had a couple of Professional Hunters from Zimbabwe stay with me for a week last month. They are an interesting breed. Their homes are surrounded by 8 ft tall concrete walls topped with razor wire. Their compound is patrolled by big dogs - american pits, German Sheppard's, and others - because theft is so rampant they have to protect everything they own. This is their off season and they were doing the US show tour signing up new hunts - Dallas Safari CLub, SCI, etc. They were getting phone calls everyday from home - one call was they were needed to get rid of some marauding elephants - I asked them how they do that - at night, they shoot some young bulls and he said that usually deters them from the fields for awhile. Another call was to take care of some lions depredating cattle - and they were negotiating saving the males because they already had some lion hunts sold in that area. I asked them if they used a 12 ga and buckshot when hunting wounded leopard. Theys said no, that would be best - but if you run into a lion, cape bufffalo, elephant, or hippo while hunting the leopard - you would have no defense - so they used their big guns. The best elephant hunting is in Sep and Oct -the dry season and 110 to 115 daytime highs - often walking ten or fifteen miles a day. The snakes they deal with are mambas, cobras, and puff adders. The mosquitoes carry malaria and the tsetse flies carry sleeping sickness. There are "shoot to kill" laws permitting lethal force on poachers. But, I dont know how they would do in -30 degree weather.
