Question, what's the customer base right now as far as folks who want some heavier grain .17 cal bullets that are more of a standard HP and/or not a varmint hyper explosive deal ? Like is there a big desire or ?

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but Hornady makes a FMJ for their HMR series in loaded ammo no clue about reloading components. I had a guy looking for prairie dog study skins and the FMJ bullets did the least amount of damage. The varmint bullets just blew them up.

To start there is not a large amount of 17 centerfire shooters. That has to be split up since the ones shooting 17 Bees, 17 Hornet can get by with a lighter bullet. Then there the ones that think you are talking about a 17 HMR. I am sure if someone made some 25, and 30 gr HP's they would sell some, but I think you would sell more of a larger caliber even though they are already available. There just isn't that many 17 centerfire shooters. I feel a lot of that is because of a lack of good bullets. The one's that do try it don't get the results they want and give up on it and tell everyone it is not a good coyote caliber.

Heavy .172 jhp is a reloader's niche market for the larger 17 centerfire calibers. I don't think that anyone currently is manufacturing a 30 grain. They have been around and tooling has been moved between individual producers. As I understand it, the problem is having a consistent and reliable source for the jackets.
Remington recently produced a run of 17 Remington using the Hornady 25 gr HP bullets. Hornady has introduced a 17 Hornet varmint round using the 25 gr HP also. I'm not sure Hornady is offering their 25 gr HP to the reloading market at this point.
Berger made a .172 Diameter 25 Grain Match Varmint HP. There may be some of these still around, but finding them is like pulling hen's teeth.
I was able to source a scant 87 original Remington HP bullets a few months back at what I considered a very premium price.

For my HMR I would like more of a hollow point for squirrels and similar sized critters. Varmint tips are fine for groundhog and close up coyotes. The hollow points are available in both 17 and 20 grain. My experience is they act very similar to the varmint tips. There are also jacketed softpoints available and I would be choosing those for game that I wanted to eat rather than destroy. Just my experience

Some of us are glad we bought 25 gr Remington HP's by the 1000's and threw them in a ammo can as a stash.

So, if someone would start making these speciality bullets would there be alot of people wanting them ? If someone where to start up production there would be a fair amount of interest. If the bullet proves to be consistent, accurate, and effective on coyotes out beyond 300 yards there would be enough interest to keep a person busy. Furthermore if you could create your idea of a perfect .17cal bullet for whatever what would I'd be ,for what use and why ? The original Remington .172" 25 gr HP is what all followers have been and will be compared to.
