My daughter had Lymes twenty-some years ago when she was just a kid. Our family doctor diagnosed it as the flu and sent her home. My wife suspected Lymes and pushed for a test but the doctor refused even though our county had the highest incidence rate of Lymes in the state at that time.

A few days later my daughter was worse and developed Bells Palsy, half her face was paralyzed. My wife and daughter went back to the doctor. To say my wife was angry would be a major understatement. She made the doctor order the test and it came back positive for Lymes. My daughter was treated with antibiotics and recovered quickly, The Bells Palsy went away. However, the doctor's initial refusal to test for Lymes caused my daughter several days of unnecessary suffering and the scare of Bells Palsy.

Eh...wot?

Soo, if someone carries long time Lymes, what purpose does Doxycycline fill?
Does it cure it's bacterial infection?
What is the timeline to the point that anti-bacterial drugs no longer prove successful?

I had it years ago ,
I was never so sic in my life , I'm 72 now
Started out with achy joints and severe flu like symptoms...
Doctors assistant kept treating it as the flu ...
I ended up so sic I had to go to the emergency room , where they admitted me ..

A doctor there asked if I had been bitten by a tic ...
Then I remembered that I was scratching a " pimple" on the back of my head , a few weeks back ..
Wow ... it had been an embedded tic .. all the time ..

Doxycycline is what they gave me , in an IV ...
followed up with doxycycline in pill form
I felt better within 24 hours..
Amazing drug , if you ask me

I got the Lyme vaccine in 1989, probably kept me from getting it. Tons of deer ticks in SEPA

This is what gets me,.how far along with your symptoms before doxycycline was administered?
If joint problems, of which I have experienced and I assume related to Lymes have gone on long enough,..can doxycycline at that point prove favorable or at the most curable?
I don't think I could throw a baseball in any direction here in north central mn without hitting anyone that has not experienced Lymes .
I have no clue as to how many have benefitted from early diagnosis and have been ( cured)?,.so to say.
My feeling we will continue on with whatever symptoms materialize .

My wife has had it twice. The first time over 20 years ago was before it was widely known and it was misdiagnosed and she had a rough time before they finally got it figured out. I think it messes with your internal organs because she had a hard time with meat and any food that was a little greasy for a long time. Then she finally had her gall bladder removed which helped a lot. The second time she got it, she had the telltale marks on the skin and got it diagnosed and taken care of right away. Heavy antibiotics, etc.

She is fine, but I know some people who were harmed enough by it that they will never be the same and I know one 39-year-old woman who died from it. Some people have symptoms far worse than others.

I was one of the first diagnosed cases in WI circa 1985. Very sick until the figured out what it was. Lost a solid year of my life. Also was a trial person for the first vaccine. Diagnosis and meds have come a long way in the last 40 years.

X2,my doctor talked me into getting the vaccine because I am outside 7 days a week. I also use a lot of permethrin on gators and have used tic collars around the boots in real bad tic areas.

Thanks for everyone's response - I have been missing a good bunch of people here not being a member but did look at the forum as a quest. Yes - could possibly be something else since I don't remember a tell-tale red/purple rash - and lab testing is somethings a crap shoot. My dad had ALS (Lou Gehrings) and they needed to prove what it's NOT before they know what it is. ALS was the death sentence - he died at age 61.

Lymes disease is not something that doctors can conclusively say you have. If you have the symptoms they can diagnose you, but there is no test that says you have it. My wife's brother has it. The only reason he knows he has it is from years of dealing with the symptoms. Lymes disease isn't curable. Once you have it, you have it. It may lay dormant, it may be something you have to deal with for the rest of your life.

About 20 years ago tested positive after symptoms. Was always in the woods training dogs. Some mornings arthritic symptoms in my ankles and wrists so bad I can't lift a cup of coffee now. Actually taking doxycycline and prednisone at the moment for sinus infection that amoxicillin wouldn't take care of last week!

I had the bullseye but got the pills right away. I used this online doctor thing we got, took 5 minutes and my prescription was sent to my drugstore of choice. Pretty slick I must say. This spring I’m going to see if I can get a standing prescription to last the summer.

I had a small plate size circle but test negative. Apparently the tests are only like 20%accurate if you test kinda soon..
They gave me doxycycline treatment just in case and the circle went away and I've had no issues. But that doxycycline makes you sun burn really easy and I never heard that part... Was August and I got so very burnt.... But I kept on going fishing...
