Which breed would you pick. My Mountain Cur finds a lot of coyote sign when I am prospecting. His parents and grandparents are coyote hunting dogs so maybe it’s inherited.

I think it's more the personality of the dog than anything, of course some breeds have more drive than others and it all depends upon what you want them to do. Locating potential sets is different than finding coyotes caught with a drag. My neighbor has a small terrior who is great at locating urine post but wouldn't work very good for chasing down a coyote. The right dog for the right job.

I have a heeler, a moutain feist and a black mouth cur. The cur is the one that gets fired up the most to go run the line. She is fearless.

If I got one I would probably try a lacy because they are suppose to work cattle too. But as much as I like dogs they are kind of a pain to me on the trapline. And I've taken them with me before. Running drags would be a different story though. I hear people talk about finding were a coyote peed previously but after watching coyotes pee on video I've come to the conclusion they pee everywhere and will check out pee anywhere.

I'd go with a Catahoula or Mtn.Cur

I don't know if I would want a trapline dog. But, once I had a coon get away with one of my traps. I went home and got my American Water Spaniel I had at the time. She tracked the coon to a tree. I was able to shoot him out of the tree. Got the coon and my trap.

I have had a lot of different dog breeds in my life. Mt Cur have the most hunt in them of any dog I have ever seen. I did have a male english pointer that was close - but he was an outlier among the rest of my pointers

I raised Catahoulas for a long time and hands down they are one of the finest dogs for anything you need a dog for. They track by both sight and smell, they can climb trees, swim with the best of them and will back down from nothing. They are not for everyone as they sometimes need a strong hand to see things your way. If you have children you will never spank one as long as that dog is alive. I raised some big bad hog dogs that would destroy any living carbon based life form that made the mistake of tangling with them. But that same dog would lay there, while small girls put lipstick on it and painted its toenails. I had one (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) that had a missing ear from hogs and was scared up pretty bad. She worked cattle hard and was our early warnging intruder detection device. We hatched some ducks and she adopted those ducklings as her own. She would curl up and they would sleep with her. They followed her all over the ranch. Anything come near those ducks and she would try to kill it. I had one that ran a trapline with me back in the day, about as good as it gets as a tag along.

I had a Miniature sheltie. Looked exactly like a little Lassie so wenamedher lass. She loved going on the Trapline and treed more squirrels than any other dog around.

I had a Dorn dog, great dog! Right now I have a Labradoodle and she absolutely loves anything to do with trapping.
