Surprised to find this red in my varmint trap behind my barn. Usually catch feral cats etc… Released her to raise another litter of pups for next season.

I would be hard pressed to let one go that close to the home place. But I prefer to sell or be the one eating my chickens if they are going to get eaten. Pretty cool to see she got herself in there. I would not have thought a fox would go in there. Must have been hungry, then again their dens are probably pretty tight places.

Nice catch, never had a fox in a live trap.

don't have chickens, cats or any critter that ain't skun at my farm. I'd let it go in the yard and hope it raised future fox to trap when prime.
Probably eat the feral cats that show up from time to time and save me the chore

Few years back I setup a game camera on a cage to see if I could get the resident fox to go in. Had the door fixed open, so didn't actually catch them, just wanted to see if they would go in. Coons, possums, skunks and cats would. Fox worked it hard and did just about everything BUT go in. Never once had footage of the fox inside that trap.

There used to be an online video where lady setup a cage to catch a chicken killing fox. Somebody told her to use a live bird as bait......in a separate cage beyond her cage trap, which was then covered in brush to form a tunnel. Fox could see the live bird at end of tunnel, but that could not see it or get to it from any other angle. Circled it about 5 times, but eventually charged in to grab the bird thru the trap and she caught it. Bird a little upset, but past that, no harm done to it.

If I was after chicken killing varmints of any kind, a cage setup like that would probably work, as would a body grip set in a box with visible target at other end. Target presented, but safely protected from any harm.

I set cage traps around farm buildings at times. The bottom of the cage traps are always covered with dirt, where practical, to hide the feel of the cage wire. Have caught a handful of grey foxes over the years in these traps with dirt covered bottoms. You would be surprised how close the grey fox get to the buildings if no dogs around. I'm talking as close as coon, feet away.

TILL THAT DAY.....

Uggh, you released it? Am I on a trapping forum or PETA forum. Guess you don’t hunt, or certainly not turkey or quail.

I have caught several grey fox in coon size cages, only caught red pups in them no adults. Had one job I caught all 7 red pups but couldn’t get the parents to go in, figured if I surrounded the pups with open cages bigger in size the adults might go in but they vanished on me.

Well done letting her go.
You should leave a bit of food out for her.near where she will den.It is important this time of year and it will help her reproductive sucess, and increase the carrying capacity of the land..
Good furbearer management.
You will have a couple to harvest next november/december.
