A guy north of me has sheep, ducks and chickens running lose all over his place. So he keeps traps set year around for at least the last 6 or 8 years that I know of. He's got a couple sets about 20 foot off the road. His sets must be a pretty well guarded secret because I've never seen another like it or read about anything close. These aren't sets for the beginners, more for the experienced wolfers that really know their stuff and how the coyotes think and work a set. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2024/03/full-49484-211273-1000001403.jpg) Most of time he uses 6 to 8 eggs scattered around for bait not a dead sheep. For a change up he'll sometimes set an egg between the jaw and the pan.

Boys that in the pic is how he sets. No covered traps at set. And as Bob stated he catches coyotes this way.
Bob I think it's the same guy. He's still alive but has moved to town. Comes out to farm regularly. I wondered if you had seen his sets and would recognize them.
I posted this because any time someone says something like this set works or this lure/bait works because I've caught coyotes using it or asks if this set will work or this bait will work I think of the way this guy sets. Same when someone says you don't need to this or that to catch coyotes.
Pretty much any method or attractant will "work", some things and some methods just aren't as effective or as efficient as others.
This guy doesn't think you need to cover traps to catch coyotes and he's right because he catches some without doing it.

I would bet he's actually caught more coyotes in a year using this set than anyone has in the tire set.
Think his secret to making this work is perfect pan tension and 13 swivels.
Boone pm me if you want to know how he sets his pan tension . The rest of you are going to have to pay to learn the secret unless your within 250 miles of Marion Ks then I'm not sharing at all.

I have also heard stories like these years ago. The only way i can see it is if animals are on a carcass at night & maybe tearing at it & stomping around wildly.
But to prove it to me someone would have to do it and set up trail cameras & show me
TILL THAT DAY.....

Exposed Baits and Traps set close together is guaranteed to catch all kinds of Protected Birds/Eagles!!
A trapped Eagle looks bad even on private land. Traps should be set 30’ away from the carcasses. It’s the Law in many western states. So be careful. X2
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

If a coyote has never had a reason to shy away from a random piece of steel, why would it be frightened of one which it can clearly see? If a coyote has been pinched by a trap, no amount of careful stabilizing or blending will fool it. It will approach the site, scratch at the ground six feet away, and veer off, avoiding the site completely. This ole boy likely does not catch educated coyotes with those kind of sets, but I'll bet he does alright on the uneducated ones. Now if he pinches one it will be game over for him catching that coyote. When I set foothold traps for fox crawling under chain link fence, I bed the trap but don't cover it. That fox is looking for a stable, flat spot under that fence to step on. On an uncovered trap, that would be the pan. I was surprised how well this works for fox. I haven't had an opportunity to try in on coyotes.

Looks like a great way to catch birds, but yes, uneducated coyotes will step on exposed traps. A catch a handful of them every season in my extremely flashy and heavily lured exposed walkthroughs I set for bobcats.
If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

I’m sorry. But this^^^^^ is not true. I made a living for years catching coyotes with 3 toes or less. Some of us deal with messed up educated coyotes on a daily basis. When in South Alabama. I used to follow lots of messed up coyotes. Everyone in the south. That could drive to a Co op and buy a duke trap and dig a dirt hole was trapping and toe pinching coyotes. Once. On a 14 day job I had 6 out of 21 coyotes that had = Missing toe or several missing toes. A man has to just figure out a way to win !!!!! Coyotes are individuals! So smart some dumb

I would urge you to remove this post. No way should this type of set be championed by responsible trappers for obvious reasons already stated. This set would make you eligible for a $6250 fine in my state.
