I recently bought a 2018 Toyota Tundra. I was all set to buy a new one and started building it online until I couldn’t find the V8 option. I researched the twin turbo V6’s and they are impressive on paper. More power and torque than my beloved 5.7 which I still consider a half million mile motor. But they have had lots of issues, especially the first year they came out with them which was 2022 I believe. That put me off of buying a new Tundra.
I started doing my homework, and soon realized that GM has been producing junk for many years. They have lots of known problems and they refuse to address them. Instead, they sometimes simply change the name of the system and just keep pushing it on the public. I own and have owned lots of older GM’s, but I won’t be buying any newer ones.
Ford and their 5.0 and their bigger one, a 6.2 I believe, looked pretty good and that became my second choice in a used pick up.
I never even considered Dodge, owned several, will never own another.
In the end I went with the Tundra with a 5.7 like my old one. My last tundra was a 2008 that I bought new in 2009 and ran for 100,000 miles. I hauled tons of construction equipment with it and used it to tow, my backhoe, a combined tractor/trailer weight of about 9,000 pounds. I had zero mechanical issues with it. That kind of reliability makes an impression.
I would’ve liked to get an even newer one, a 2020 or 2021, but folks were asking $40,000 and up for those and I refuse to pay that for a used pick up.
The 2018 Tundra I bought only had 53,000 miles on it and the frame was super clean, no rust at all. Even after three months of looking, I still think I paid too much, but it was $2,000 to $3,000 below market value.
