Spent Wednesday shooting docks on Buggs Island (Kerr Lake) for crappie. Ended up with right at 40 keepers, with several over 1 1/2 lbs. Water temp in the high 60's.

Best of the day was this 2.18 lb post spawn female.

If you can make it to Disputanta Va on Saturday, I’ll commit to turkey nuggets and fried crappie. Get here by 0545 and we can see about working a bird before the grease gets hot. grin

Based on your screen name, I’m going to take that as a compliment brother.

As mentioned, most folks have never seen a 2lb crappie, let alone caught one. I have went years that I’ve caught over a 1000 crappie a year in the wild and not caught a 2 lb’r. In our part of the world, they are rare, even in well cared for farm ponds.

I have taken a couple aquaculture classes where we looked at what food source would produce the highest gain in fish. Freshwater shrimp was our best attempt. Those ponds regularly produced 2 lb’ers. But they were heavily regulated and managed.

I know in the South, guys can catch them fairly regularly especially with front facing sonar. I know it’s legal for now and don’t look down on anyone who uses it, but it is very much like spot lighting deer in my opinion.

Buggs Island is known for big crappie. And you’re right, the electronics play a huge part in catching them. It has and will continue to change fishing. 2lb fish don’t raise eyebrows there locally, especially prespawn. I’ve known several folks who have bested 3lb fish.

Would love to have caught this fish prespawn to have seen what she weighed at her max, but I’ve got zero complaints.

The itch has been scratched for a few weeks… back after the longbeards in the AM.
