Depends on where I am trapping. We don't get a lot of 'em around here, so some places they get released, if near horses they get dispatched. My sisters place they always get released she likes em around and I only get one every couple years there anyhow.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

I release them. Rare to catch one again. Something needs to eat dead stuff after the buzzards leave for the winter. Horse pasture they get killed.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Same as coons kill them all I try on the farm seem to succeed and a few months later more tracks appear.

the farm has a no mercy policy on possums . Grandpa lost his favorite horse years ago to the disease they carry.
if the hide will pay enough to make it worth your while , if not right along with any other bad fur and carcasses in the compost pile.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Being aware that some states have rules called I believe "wanton waste???" and littering dumping laws..
Years ago I returned to my truck to find Warden standing by it. He said oh it's you? So Of course I knew him and he knew me so didn't have to ask to check my license.. he knew I had one. When he ask had I caught anything in the traps I was checking. I had no reason to not say flat out what that was. Said I had hen turkey in a 1 1/2 DJ trail set, which I released unharmed took two steps and flew away. I then said I had caught a small opossum that I whacked and threw in brush pile. He looked at me and said.. "You mean you Release it in bush pile." I said oh yeah I released it into a brush pile.. So I have since that day released in some fashion every opossum I have caught. That is what I know about that. I've heard they eat millions of ticks so properly wording of releasing is important.
