We don't live in Kentucky and we can shoot from the road in MN at small game and unprotected species. With all the hawks and what not, they don't lay around long.

We call them striped gophers, the proper name is 13 lined ground squirrels. When we were kids we shot a lot of them, box of 22 shells didn't last very long

No bounty on them. I believe there is on pocket gophers?
49er. I remember back in the late 70s, dad would take the family out on the weekend cruising back roads.
A few times, I recall going through a 500 brick of .22.

After the huge flood of 97, it wiped them out and there was a several year stretch where I didn't see one.
Looks like we need another big flood.

Geez that sounds like a good time. We have VERY few around here. I did smoke a Quill Pig along the road with the 45 yesterday though.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Reminds of when I was a kid we would go to the dump and shoot rats. A box of shells wouldn't last long. After you hit one and it fell back into the pile you would hear it squalling. We thought it was when the others were starting to eat it but don't know that for sure. Different times back then.

I have shot a brick of 22"s at Richardson's in half a day and the guy with me did too. We could have easily shot twice that in a day.

Around here pocket gopher bounties vary by township. 5 bucks and up seems to be the norm.

Part of me wants to see it. Stay dry so the ruff grouse can have another hatch like last year

When I was a kid pocket gophers were 30 cents and striped 5 cents Now I believe pockets are 2 and farmers probably match Not much hay grown anymore as ideal habitat. Back in the day I would catch 700-800 a summer Probably only that many in the whole township now.

Two inches a rain a week until November sounds about right.

Took the same 7 mile route a bit ago.
Light winds, sunny n warm. Perfect for them to be out.
Seen 5 and shot 4.
It is kinda fun but the main reason is to keep the Badgers away.
I don't know where they came from but the last 2 years they have appeared BIG TIME !

They are starting do dig hole right on top of main traveled gravel roads.

Local gopher trapper is charging $10.00 per gopher to landowner plus township bounty which is around $4.00-$5.00 . Good money , no youngster's doing it anymore

those are the days you burn your finger tips

couple of late wet snows have put a hurting on the RGS
we always applied the 100 yard rule, nothing inside that and the 200 rule was for the 22-250. BUT if you miss it's the other guys turn rill he misses; 30 second on a insight target and no shot was a miss
Sunday shooting only after church was out

Thirteen-lined ground squirrels are rare in the parts of Ohio I've lived in. The only bigger population I've ever seen was near Trenton, Ohio. Years ago, I shot some with a Crossman 2100, skinned them out, stretched them and preserved them with borax. The skins came out beautifully. I think they would make good fur coats for dolls. I think I ended up giving them all to the Miami County Park District, with a bunch of other skins and skulls.

I was out on a late snow shooting them one day and woke up snow blind the next day. Burned eyes were more of a concern after that.
