I have the S&W Shield in .45 ACP. It's a dependable gun but it's hard to control with hot loads and I despise the trigger. Maybe it's common in striker fire guns, maybe not, but there's a lot of slack and it feels like gravel.

I've been toying with a Sig P226.

For all these people who say a 12 gauge is the best, have you patterned 00 buck at 15 feet? I havent, but have seen other loads out of imp cylinder at very close and it’s extremely tight. I shot 00 buck and 4 buck at 40 yards last year out of a mod choke and it very much resembled the pattern shotguns seem to throw in the movies at 12 feet when a bad guys blasts the door….
I think youre probably throwin a slug from across the bedroom with any shot/choke combo. May as well have 30 rounds and a light on a 400 dollar AR. Of course your rounds may end up goin through a few houses.

I have patterned several varieties of buck

an inch a yard is a fair estimate so at 5 yards a 5 inch pattern you can get tighter but that is about it.

when people say this they are thinking no engagement will happen outside the longest hall or room in their house. in my house if you jammed yourself in one corner and shot as far as you could see 30 feet is it and you would be back to the far corner shooting the front door so fair to say unlikely. much more likely would be in the 8-16 feet or 2 to 5 yards

the reason for a shotgun is 3 fold
1 they are cheap a 250 dollar shotgun will get it done reliably buy a used one you can probably get to sub 200.
2 most of use country types grew up with them and they are totally natural in the hands and to the shoulder and fast to the eye to new never use one before this isn't the case.
3 #4 buck is enough to work but not so bad after the 2nd wall , even if your pattern isn't much larger than a slug it isn't held together like a slug.

the reasons for ARs in the home are 4 fold
1 easiest to shoot platform , if we are talking training time to hits on target at speed it wins.
2 Ammo capacity this helps with hits on target at speed.
3 ease of mounting lights and dots
4 with the right choice of ammo it can be not to bad for over penetration.

Win M12 heavy duck, found at pawn shop with a barrel cut to 20”. First 2 are 3” #4, the rest of the mag are 2 3/4” slugs. It holds either 6 or 7 rounds.

Glock in 45acp. I can grab and shoot at normal combat range very effectively.

AR with reflex sight.

All within reach of my pillow.

For people that appreciate a real good trigger, look at any of the Canik models. If you want concealable and thin grip, check out the Canik Mete. All mags for Canik's are interchangeable.

Have you considered something like a Mossberg shockwave in either 12 or 20 gauge? I don’t think the mossberg shockwave gets the attention it deserves for home defense. Small, easily handled, devastating firepower of a smooth bore shotgun and the reliability of mossberg….Mini shells, slugs and/or buckshot, once proven to be 100% dependable gives the user greatly increased magazine capacity while decreasing felt recoil and still having significant energy.

I’ve patterned a dozen or more buckshot loads out of my shotguns, and it’s something a person has to see for themselves to appreciate. Some spread more than others, some stay tight out to 40 yards. Handguns are definitely worth considering, but shotguns offer incredible firepower as well as unique specialized loads to choose from.

why buy a Mossberg shockwave if you already have a shotgun?

Some of these shotguns will the the head off a turkey at forty yards. I don't understand this talk of patterning something you'll use at ten paces.

CZ 75 for home defense. All metal - good pointing. large magazines. You can get night sights and flashlights to fit them. Good triggers.

Size, legality, and ability to handle mini shells as well as standard ammo without additional modifications would be my answer to that question. Shockwaves are awfully short to not need additional paperwork as I understand it.

Most handguns are great, too. I usually prefer an external safety, well as long as they don’t have one of those ridiculous magazine disconnect safeties. I’ll never buy another gun with a magazine disconnect safety.

That reminds me of the time I bought my first house and had a problem with tweakers stealing gas out of my truck. I parked so the lid would be right next to the window of the living room. Put dogs in the room to alert me. Get them quiet in another room and just sit back with the 12 til they creep up. I could see them wiggling like worms already. 2 days later the plan was unfolding perfectly.....but I had not planned how I was going to keep the wife quiet. My dad says my wife crying, begging me me not to shoot them was probably more deterring than my plan. Oh well.

Intruders around my place will be 100yds out, if it's dark they'll have their hands full with a livestock dog with strong genetics. Doubt anyone would want to go farther than that. They shoot my dog, that's the Q.

As far as cheap semi pistols. I saw guns.com had h&k p2000 v3 for 586$ new. I waited too long and that deals gone. I got a p229. I like da/sa. Both are. Gun.deals . Go to this website punch in the manufacturing number to the search and it will find the cheapest price on the Internet. I have never beat it.
