Other than measuring inside spread, I've never been caught up in scoring a deer. I find it interesting becuase it's tangible information, much like the weight of a fish. My biggest bass weighed X...

All that said, I've never had one scored and just shoot what I consider to be a 'big or mature buck'.

For those of you who are into this sort of thing, what's your best guess at what this buck would score. Our SE VA bucks don't generally get much bigger than 160 - 170 lbs for reference if that helps. I'm guessing 19-20" inside spread based on my familiarity with my cameras.

I promise this isn't a 'gotcha' post where I'm gonna tell you what it actually scored and how wrong you are. Deer is still alive and well as of February.

Measurements per side,
Main beams - 22" ( left side seems shorter than the right side)
Circumstances- 17"
G1 & G2 - 6" each (12" Total)
G3 - 9"
G4 - 5.5"

Total each side - 65.5"

R + L + Spread = 65.5 + 65.5 + 19 = 150"

A shooter for sure. Pretty even as well, except for maybe the beams. I hope we find out some day what the real number is.

More pics would help. Multiple pics are very helpful as its not uncommon for the angle of the pic to distort the size of antlers. Might be the angle of pic but that deer looks really wide with really long mains. Allowing for no distortion I'd rough guess 170s
But I think that camera angle might be making him look much bigger he is.

Appreciate it. I'm sure there is a pretty big range just by seeing a picture.

And YES... I'd like a chance to find out first hand. grin

Sorry Yes sir, your response popped up as I was replying to the previous post. Wish I had more pics. Saw this deer x2 during bow season and glimsped him once during ML. This is the only pic I got all season.

Schmattz has it pretty darn close. I would guess beams at 25” due to them being slightly upturned. This would add another 6-7 inches. Looks like a solid mid 150’s buck, may even hit 160”

Its really hard to tell because of the pic distortion. Based on that pic, remove the rack from his head and it looks like nearly his whole body would fit inside of it. Would be nice to see some other pics if available.

The antlers are bigger than the body. Something doesn’t look right about it for sure.

It's the one and only pic I got... Spread is pretty easy to tell based on how he's got his ears spread. I'm sure there's a perspective issue anytime it's not straight on or straight from the side. My area is blessed with really good genetics for VA. My kids or I take at least 1 deer a year >18" inside spread with good mass and height, but based on this pic and seeing him last year x3, he'd be the best buck I've had a chance on. Hopeful he makes it till bow season or beyond.

I think the deer is really wide but it's not based off comparing it to ears as they appear to me to be laid back some and your looking at the rack at a 45° not straight on.

Spread: 20”
Mains: 48”
Tines: 46”
Mass: 32”

Total: 146”

Just based on that pic, I’m not seeing the mass or tine length. Then again my own deer I thought maybe 150ish, maybe. He was 168”

With that said…he should at minimum put on 12” this year.

I've seen a lot of racks like that in Southampton county.
The deer there are relatively small bodied with extra tall racks. Makes their racks seem a lot bigger than they are. I'll bet that deer isn't more than 3 or 4 years old. I'll also bet that if that buck is in Southampton county, he won't get one year older.

Where's Byrd? He'd nail that down to within 100" laugh

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

You have to remember that 1 out of 3 Democratic Voters is just as dumb as the other two.

+30 miles as the crow flies from Southampton, although I know the area fairly well.

The only thing he has going for him score wise is his main beams are extra long plus some width. Points are short and not much mass. Still a cool looking buck.
