I have the smith and Wesson 460 and 500 actually prefer 500 but can’t go wrong either way I also have a smith 629 which is also a good choice but not as fun as 500

Taurus has a 44 too. all good options but in my opinion a sling shot is more dependable than a ruger so I would go with the smith and wesson
The rifle has no will of its own it may be used for evil but there are more good men than evil men and evil will be corrected by good men with rifles.

you have big and heavy with the redhawk and like you say you probably take a rifle any way how about more of a defensive gun that carries easily not to hunt but to carry more frequently and have on the hunt as a backup or around camp.
double action or auto a little less total recoil and more rounds available.
how about a S&W 610 , stainless , 6 rounds , feeds from moon clips and can run 40s&w or 10MM both from the moon clips
Glock 40 MOS 10mm with 15 rounds and a spare mag , yes I am aware you said revolver
the logic being if your making holes through stuff , faster and more controllable is better and MO Holes is MO better it matters less if the hole is .401 or .429
head in the direction of easier to have always on you
just my thoughts

GCP I appreciate the thought process and i have several of the type your talking about in various sizes and brand and types. Looking at more of a hunting type .
To throw a wrench into my first post, I just found a Thompson contender with 3 barrels in 30.30, .223 and .22lr that would be a fun Trio

I have a 223 contender. They are fun. I had a 35 Rem barrel, but my brother wanted it, so I gave it to him. Look for a Rem XP100. That would be a hunting pistol.

I have always had good luck with my Smith and Wessons. My 629 started acting up by not hitting the primer hard enough to make it go. I tried a few things that didn't work so I sent t off the Smith and Wesson and they had a whole laundry list of things they did to it. Came back nice a shiny and new looking too. The barrel didn't line up with the cylinder, had a cracked yoke, worn firing pin and a bad spring. All fixed for free. I shot the heck out of that pistol. Been carrying it for a long time now. I think my next one will be the 6 shot .22. I have the 10 shot one right now but I don't like the longer barrel even though it does shoot nice.
Just passin through

NV… I’ve carried a Smith and Wesson model 629 “Mountain Gun” for many years in a 44mag. Excellent wheel gun particularly for the purpose you site. I hav a belt holster and a beautiful Alaskan made shoulder/center chest holster that is second to none. Great stuff you order specific to you gun brand, model, and barrel length. Mine is a 4”. Any info you need on ordering an of the acutraments send a PM happy to help.

Take the scope off. A mad bear might give you 2 seconds to draw and shoot.

Take the scope off. A mad bear might give you 2 seconds to draw and shoot. For the use listed, never a scope. I can shoot my 44 very well but the reality is in a bad bear situation I’m pushing it into fur and firing. Spot on Danny. I saw a guy some years ago deal with a bear that had come back to life. A scope would have done far more harm than good. Osky

Between 18 and 26 I went through a bunch of hunting guns and tried about everything. One thing with the big heavy hunting revolvers was they were well big and heavy. Yes, I shot deer at a little over 100 yards with my supper red hawk in 44 mag and with my tc encore pistol in 308 Winchester. But I came to realize I didn't like packing them, they take longer to get on target with, they are loud, and when I had a long gun for distance and the hand gun for up close puting the long gun down to pull the handgun sounded good but was not practical and it was easier to shoot them with the long gun. All my big handguns have long since been sold. Now I do have a 4 ?/8 black hawk in 45 lc still. But is smaller, lighter, easy to carry, and handy to use. You know the reasons people carry a much weaker round I'm a hand gun instead of or as a back up to a powerful long gun. It's because they are easier and more convenient to have on you.
Along those lines I'm with green county if I were going for a new gun I'm bear country I would seriously be looking at a 10mm Glock in a chest rig. Way thinner than a revolver, 15 rounds as fast as you can pull the trigger and fraction of a sec mag chang and on par with 44 mag in power. Yes I know not as sexy as a revolver being ugly black plastic. But I went through the big handguns faze found out it was not practical for me, and the only reason for me to have a handgun in bear for bear and I want to have it on me at all times not in the tent back at camp because I got tired of packing the big heavy thing.
