Very good post. Very overlooked maintenance issue. You will see lots of trailers on the side of road for exactly this , quite common.
For older style hubs ,
Always use a new cotter pin on the castle nut. Do not reuse it , cotter pins are cheap , failure is not.

Thanks for posting.

Some handy things to have when doing wheel bearings.

I just repacked 9 wagons and 2 boat trailers so there ready to go. A lot of people who shouldn’t be pulling trailers who are currently and they do zero maintenance on them.

There was some grease, but not up to standard....Rollers weren't cratered or damaged, hubs & spindles weren't scored.

That trailer was a older gentlemens who pulled a 2 mile round trip, low heat at 35 mph...The interstate would have cooked it.

FYI I bought a new trailer a few years back a good brand I used it local mostly then I had a long trip planned so I greased it up it took a lot of grease it took so much I thought the grease gun was not working it took 2 rounds of pumping to see any results.

Neighbor is a machinist/mechanic he said they often come new with minimal grease that seemed odd for what could happen but it sure looked that way with the trailer I had.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Always had bearing buddies and went through bearing every year.. Now that I’m old and lazy. Every other year on repacking.

Packed bearings in my boat trailer a couple weeks ago. Generally, get it done every spring.
