My son got one last week, wanted to know how many non targets he catches, does he use off set traps and yes BMI traps. My guess is something is about to change in the trapping world

Yes I got one as well. Filled it out. Didn’t see the non targets except if you make a coyote set, what else might you catch? Every Southerner puts Possum at the top of the list. Next comes coons.

Some of y'all need to tighten up the chin strap on your tin foil hats....lol

Georgia trappers must have received the survey email yesterday...I did. Took about 10 min to complete.

It's the AFWA survey that is done every few years.

They have a big convention soon in WA,,,,, I believe it will have impact on beaver trapping.
Its going to be trap and release for wetlands mitigation..
WA has their projects for Salmon....
Oregon has their projects for Salmon.
Native American have their projects.

Just my prediction....

If is works great,,,,, More state jobs....

Why would the survey want to know if you use a specific brand of trap(BMI)?

Eh...wot?

I got mine. It didn't ask anything about non-targets that I recall. It does ask if you've heard of BMP's (Best Management Practices). All the new traps you can buy now pass muster as BMP's.

From everything I saw on the survey it is going to help us more than hurt us. The anti's constantly attack us and then when we try to defend by telling the truth they claim we have no studies to back our claims. Surveys like this can help.

As an example, Oregon has "enhanced" beaver reporting that started last year. Every beaver harvested in Oregon now is required to be reported about whether it was a damage complaint or recreationally caught. What county and drainage it was caught out of, and whether it was caught on private or public land. The anti's have been trying to get beaver trapping closed on all public lands in Oregon. Well guess what? The first report has come out showing that only 3% of the 1500 beaver caught last season in Oregon came off of public lands. This fact has caught the anti's with their pants down on what their claims are about why beaver have declined in Oregon's coast range coho habitat.

Long story short, facts need to be collected to prove our points. They can only come from good reporting and good surveys. Facts are what we take to the battle when game commissions meet to make new rules. Facts are what we bring to public when the legislative action is being considered. Facts are our friends when it comes to trapping.

"Oregon now is required to be reported about whether it was a damage complaint or recreationally caught." The answer to this won't help. Unless you will be going in the ADC business.

So Dirt, do you think if the public has access to the truth about our activities that is going to hurt us? Having a % of the beaver harvest shown to be damage control caught may enlighten some to the fact that there's beaver out there causing damage. It helps our story in my opinion.
