With the warm weather Brook trout fishing in remote Adirondack lakes and ponds is winding down, but caught this 16 1/2” Brookie yesterday.
Probably will not go again until fall, when the have their spawning colors.

Gary,
There are very few lakes and ponds left in the Adirondacks that have self sustaining heritage strain Brook trout. With that being said, most remote lakes and ponds are stocked from the air with hatchery raised Heritage strain Adirondack Brook trout ,from eggs and milt taken from these few remaining lakes. , ( Horn , Windfall, and Little Tupper Lake strain) They are stocked with Brook trout at about 1 year old at around 4 “.

The trout in then picture is most likely 4 -5 years old. Currently DEC fishery biologists are revising the ADK lake and ponds Brook trout management plan.
There are about 400 lakes and ponds that have Brook trout . Biologists claim introduction over the years of bait fish in these bodies of water have been detrimental to the Brook trout fishery . Biologists state , Brook trout do best in mono-cultures.

LOL, I fish with flies and spinning rig. Caught it trolling a classic Lake Clear Wabbler trailing a worm. I’m no purest, I do release small trout if they are not hooked bad. But, I fish for Brook trout because I like fishing in remote wilderness settings. And to put filets in the the frying pan lakeside for a shore lunch and the freezer. It was a 5 mile round trip to this lake 4 miles with canoe cart, 1 mile with canoe on my back.

I make no apologies for killing and eating Brook trout. NY lakes and ponds Brook trout possession limit is only 5 of any size. Brook Trout on average only live 4-6 years, so that fish most likely would have died of natural causes in another year.

Yes some lakes have lake trout, bows and browns. No cutthroat. But I target indigenous Brook and lake trout.

That made me laugh. The best day I ever had on a wild fish lake in the Adks was with my fly rod, but for the most part, if I fished only with a fly rod in most of these remote lakes, I would have to bring sandwiches for a shore lunch.

That is a beautiful fish.
I don't eat them, return them to the water. I have a secret water where I catch big ones.

Before I got old, broken down, and fat (in my 20's),
I used to canoe back into the Saint Regis Wilderness
Canoe Area & then portage miles further to
Nellie & Bessie ponds in Franklin County.

Caught both big ones and big numbers there !!

Lots of Brook trout suppers fried in
the cast iron skillet over a camp fire.

Early May right after ice out was phenomenal !!! laugh

The Copper Phoebe was my go to lure
plus copper Lake Clear Wobblers teamed up with
the Eagle Claw trout spinner with red beads & a worm.
