I found it crawling across my kitchen floor this morning. I have never seen an ant type crawly critter like this. I live in NW Iowa. Its abdomen got smashed a little when I collected him.

I usually treat the exterior of my house with Demon insecticide a couple of time during the summer.

Looks like a carpenter ant. They will eat your house. Check out your crawl space for dampness in the sills and floor joists.

Our old hunting cabin had them in the walls you could hear them eating on a quiet night they pinch with those pinchers but lack poison like the fire type ants have.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

Wood ants, make a heck of a mess if they get in the framework of your house

I would either be doing some thorough inspecting or hiring someone to inspect and treat if any more found

Same ones got into the flotation foam of my boat.
They removed over half of it and tunneled through the rest.
Industrious as beavers.

I had them get into a stack of 2x4's in a barn, they ate all the soft wood and left the harder "rings". Nothing left but thin slivers of pine rings. Made great kindling tho!

In most of the US, carpenter ants do more damage to houses than termites. Sevin Dust around the baseboards will help destroy a small infestation. If you have a large infestation, you'll have repair work to do. Carpenter ants can cause major structural damage to a house.

Either this post jinxed me or made me aware. I was just out in my detached garage and saw 2 of these on the floor. Have never seen one on the house before.
