Since most of us on T'man appear to be older timers, many of you probably have acid reflux, I thought I would share my experience.
For the past several years I have suffered from this. I had to sleep on my back with head held high on a pillow, even resorted to inclining my bed several degrees, a prescription to Omeprazole, careful not to eat too close to bedtime, ant acids, etc..
Back in early December I went on a low carb diet in order to get back to what I weighed in my 20's (now 66yo); things like eggs for breakfast, a light lunch, and meat and mostly green vegetables for supper. Cut out all breads, potatoes, rice, I cut the IPA's back from 6 a week to about 3. I'm not super "religious" about it, I eat a small amount of corn products like chips and tortillas, and sometimes I'll treat myself to a small amounts of sweets, etc..
I've lost about 18 pounds and have been at my goal for a month or so.
I just realized that I haven't had one episode of "heart burn" (acid reflux) since mid December, and without taking any meds whatsoever. Why did my doctors never tell me about this?

Why did my doctors never tell me about this?
If a doctor told you how to fix health problems with food, then you wouldn't have to pay for a pill the rest of your life. In reality though, the truth is that most doctors receive very little nutrition training in medical school so they really aren't able to give good diet advice, and most people would rather take a pill for the rest of their lives instead of eating right.

Why did my doctors never tell me about this? They most certainly did mention diet. If they didn’t, you need to find a new doctor.

I read apple cider vinegar routinely will help with reflux too. Don't know for sure. I don't have that issue. It does help, but I cant get that stuff down without gagging. I tried it with apple juice, water, honey, you name it...there is no disguising it for me.

Changing your diet probably works because what you were eating before favored a high population of the stomach bacteria responsible for acid reflux (H. pylori). A higher fiber-healthier diet probably favors the right mix of stomach microbes to curb the 'pylori' and thus the acid reflux.

I had GERD, or acid reflux, so bad that it felt like my throat was on fire. It's been over 6 years now that I haven't had to take any medications since I stopped drinking any kind of soda. It was tough to kick the habit, but it was worth it. I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, waggler.

I have lost a bunch of weight. No more pills for me. Cholesterol pill I believe started all my problems. Was always hungry. Got fat. Developed type 2 diabetes, was on insulin and 3 different blood pressure meds. Low carb diet and everything is good again except cholesterol. That pill was causing bad liver enzymes also. Dr is upset I refuse the statins but I figure its my health and heart disease is still the most Common cause of natural death. In spite of everyone on low fat diets and statins.
No more omeprazole either.

Food & Drug is as corrupt as CDC, it should be called Drugs for all, back in the day food was the drug. While you're thanking your government, hence,CDC and F&D remember to thank your farm bureau for all our poison food as well.
