I have to retire September it looks like 65. Not really ready money wise. Need a apartment for 800.00 or less a month 2 bedroom preferably. There is not one anyplace I can see for $800.00 or less. Apts have sky rocket to 1300-1500.00 a month about every place I want to live. I just want to be 15 miles from Bank fishing and a outdoor shooting range I can belong too. That’s it. Can only afford to do a lot of free things in my retirement. Any ideas. All I see were I might have a chance is in SD and ND. I lived in Fargo for 8 years loved it but 3 knee replacements on 2 knees don’t think I can take the cold. Any ideas will be welcome. Thanks. MD in Iowa just south of quad cities.

You might need to get a roommate and/or a part time job.

Yes. Right now my apartment owner has raised the rent so much it is forcing 3 people to live in a 2 bedroom apartment. They have raised the rent that much. A single person cannot make it now renting in American. MD

Have you looked in the south if you need to stay out of the cold?

Sneak across the southern border, then sneak back North. Tell them your name is Abdul and the govt will give you a place to live and take care of most of your living expenses. Also, that is the reason your rent is not realistic anymore.

I'd buy a small piece of land and put a trailer on it or live in my truck and save for a while. (If I were single.)

May be a dumb question but, if you're not ready, why retire?

Sadly, if you could speak a foreign language fluently, this would be an actual option.

If your income and savings are low, there might be some sort of government assistance available.

In small town America SD, MT, ND can rent for less then 800$. I would look small, small towns for something to rent. You could find a whole house for that money.

Lots of rivers from the Mississippi river east to bank fish from large to small ones. I would look for a small piece of land in a rural area in Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Ect get close to the cost and bank saltwater fish. Rent a msamll place or build buy and outfit a yard barn into a small cabin on that land. Zoning restrictions are less down there and it's warm. Wages are typically less but so is cost of living. Good luck.

I've been looking at apartments in Bismarck/Mandan area for work. Lots of them in the sub 1000 range.

Go up around Beaulah they are 600 to 800.

Devils Lake offers some of the best shore fishing there is. You can get an apartment there for 800 or less.

Keep this in mind when giving advice. I'm thinking he wants to go south where the climate is more moderate.

Apartments can be had in MS for $800 or less if you look around a bit.

Small rural towns in the South can be great. Visit and look around before you chose. Make sure you check for medical access. Since your getting older, driving an hour or so one way to a doctor's appointment a couple of times a month or more can get expensive and tedious. Go on in and check the local grocery store out also. They are not all the same. Summers here can be brutal, but you will eventually acclimate. Good luck on your search.

Look at west OK. Dr Hospital means driving but weather is fairly warm. Stay away from oil patch country. Rent is higher. West Ks Eastern CO is cheap too. Winters can be bad but not as cold as where your at. Not a lot of fishing except at reservoirs. People are friendly. Need to be away from beef processing plants or rent is higher.

I agree on going South. Wife and I checked out Tennessee and found it to very nice and affordable. Obviously weather would be more moderate than in the North.

Following the discussions here. Mulling our future too. The Mrs. and I kick this around all the time. Our big factors are climate, taxes, affordability of housing and living costs, and hey we plan to play a lot too. Golf, fishing, boating, and taking trips.
