Yes the AR is a strong point and yes Factory ammo for the two is close but first is first and second is second. Both good calibers that have served hunters well for a long time. But that advantage in performance has always been with the 06, granded its sometimes slight. Me personally if I was limited to one caliber and it was to hunt everything in North America I'd be OK with a 7mm rem mag.

I still say someone wanting to dip their toes in the long range game should start with a .308.

Plethora of factory ammo choices, wealth of reloading information, lots of reloading component options, inherently accurate, moderate recoil, super long throat life, and relatively “cheap” to shoot.

All of which is conducive to putting lots of rounds down range which is what is needed.

I really enjoy rifles, even though I don't own many. I'm not getting into particulars, but Indiana only became a "rifle" deer hunting state in the last 10ish years. Other than coyotes and plinking, I didn't have a real need for a rifle. I asked a good friend and a really "dyed in wool" shooter what I should buy. He said "308 Winchester because it's a great round and ammo is readily available". 308 it was! That being said, it is a great round and 308 was one of the first rounds to reappear after the ammo shortage.

Stop shooting the in the hinds then. Unless you were talking about heart and lungs. Well placed shot in the boiler room wastes nothing.

308 is great because of it's consistent drop. It's easy to gauge. 30-06 will gain you 200 fps which may or may not be necessary given the situation. I'm from the west, 300-450 yards is my long shots. I like Lazer beams. My limit is a sliver of light between the cross hairs and the back of the animal. That's 450 yards. 350 hold in line with it's back. 275 and closer hold dead on. So for me 270 and 7 mag cover all bases.

I’m a .308 fan too

Best? Nah. Most versatile? I’d argue

I’ve got a CZ 550 in .308 that shoots really , really good. 178 gr Eldx pushed by a moderate load of Varget. Tack driver

Last post page one Pete goes into
bullet drop calcs.
Where do these numbers come from
and are they accurate?

In the 80s these were on some
cartridge boxes and not even
close on two rifles we tested.

Face it, guys love this stuff.

I used the Winchester power points velocity from the box

I do get an average 2625 with my 308win 180gr load

I don't have any 308win power points but I might have some factory 30-06 180gr I could run over the Chrono.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
