Gavin is the 11 year old boy that I've been mentoring trapping. Gus was a super chill, calm, older dog.

I graduated with the scumbag that shot the dog. He hasn't changed one bit.

Gus was shot 3 times. 2 times in the hip and once in the stomach. The shooter lives a mile away. The dog never ran so there is no way he made it there and back in the short time walking.

This is why one has to control their animals, you never know what kind of kook is out there.

Not blaming the victim, just pointing out that the world is full of people who don't see things the same as you and I.

"Most animal abuse cases in Minnesota are considered misdemeanors, but killing a service animal can be a felony with a punishment of up to four years in prison."

Seems a little harsh and non productive for a punishment, costs the taxpayers to jail the guy and the victim is still out his dog.
I think a better punishment is to replace the service dog with one of the victims choice.

Flame away.

The shooter is an idiot, but a felony? AR nuts would like to see murder charges for killing an animal. One step closer.

Dog was likely shot laying in the water at the end of their driveway. One of his favorite spots. Next door neighbors horse was also shot in the last month.

Very unfortunate, very. Can not loose sight of the fact the guy was in his own yard and had prior recent experience with strays bothering his mother. I would bet he had no idea he was shooting a service animal. Shooting someone elses dog is seldom a good idea.

You'd think any defense attorney would get the case dismissed purdy quick. Are there no leash laws there?

I hate to see the kids lose their dog, but to lose your right to possess a firearm over a misdemeanor is crazy. If the dog had been over there several times and he had tried to contact the owners as he stated then some of the responsibility lies on them to. People need to be responsible for keeping their dogs home
As far as him never running , I'm going to call it like I see it, a dog that just got shot with a 22 is going to run as fast as they can. The excuse that he couldn't have been on the guys property because the couldn't have walked home that fast seems ridiculous.

I'm not big on therapy dogs being considered service dogs either. My horses make me happy when I ride them , are they service horses? Is the dog actually registered as a service dog or is the article just trying to dramatize it? Always 3 sides to a story.

Registered therapy dog 100%

Shooter never tried to contact them. Would have been on camera if he had. He is also already a convicted felon.

Need to teach the guy to shoot straighter.

I call BS on therapy dog. Registration is five minutes online and typing in your debit card. Total scam.

My guess is the dog was at the neighbors, where it did not belong. I never saw a running dog that was up to any good.

This is why I hate to post on a thread like this, more info comes out after you give your opinion.

If that happened to my dog I would be in jail for beating the guy to within an inch of his life. I wouldn't kill him, but he would wish he was.

Unless he shot you too. Best to keep a cool head. Had a guy get paralyzed and one go to jail over a dog in this area several years ago. Ruined two lives forever over a dog.

Not a big proponent of therapy animals being called a service animal. Therapy animals do have their place. Yes sir, your horse could be a therapy animal. At the hospital, there was a mini horse that came in one a week to provide cheer to the patients, especially the kids. Dolly would spend about two hours on several floors of the hospital.

Yup, not hard to register a therapy animal, several website offer that! Much different than a service animal which must pass performance tests for discipline and the service/s they provide.

A trained service animal would not leave its' owner and run down a driveway or out of a yard without being released by the own to seek assistance.

On the other side, in Wisconsin, it's illegal for a civilian to shoot at any free running dog; short of personal attack by the animal I would guess.

The guy knew it was a neighbor kid's pet. What was the point of shooting it? Was it attacking him or attacking anyting? It doesn't sound like it was. It sounds like the guy was a loser ahole with a mean streak.

The dog should have been under the owners' control and not allowed to roam but that shouldn't mean a death sentence.

In Pennsylvania it is illegal to shoot free-running dogs unless they are attacking you, another person, your domestic animal or wildlife.

None of that appears to be the case here. just a loser being an ahole. I hope he pays dearly both within and outside the constraints of the law.

Eh...wot?
