Fast and simple offset - no nails, welds or wire #8162235

I recently picked up a large pile of #3 double long springs and have been going through them. Most are good and strong. None are offset. We are not required to use offset jaws here. Yet. I prefer them for coyotes and wondered how tough it would be to offset these without the wire, nails or welding.

I got turned onto the Diablo Steel Demon circular saw blades a few years ago and immediately ditched my abrasive wheel chop saw. I have a 7 1/4” in my circular saw and a 10” in my old miter saw. It’s a cheap, old, non sliding miter saw. Once you use one of these blades you’ll get rid of your abrasive wheel chop saw. They put off a tenth of the sparks, will cut steel or aluminum. Don’t heat up like an abrasive cutter and leave almost no burr. And the metal is only warm. You can handle it bare handed after making a cut

I wondered if I could stack a pair of blades and make a plunge cut on a #3 to create an offset. I whipped up a crude little jig and tried my first trap. It worked awesome! Need to touch it up with a few seconds with a right angle grinder but really very little work. And it took less than 15 seconds to make the cut. I did put a shim from my stacked dado set in to give me a little space between the blades and to widen the cut just a smidge. And I used two 7 1/4” blades rather than 10” because they would give me the cut I needed without touching the springs.

Great idea and fast. I used a angle grinder for mine because the cutting wheel fits between the lams nicely

I have other traps that need offset and I'm going to try your setup

Nice work on those jaws! Wetdogs jaw lam.s should be a consideration as a few dry fires with those cut jaws and the middle begins to collapse inward...lam.s help strengthening the jaws up and reduce jaw being pulled out.

It is located by blocks on the jig and I use 1/2” or 3/8” shims under the dog arm and the back spring to level it and support it. I hold the back spring with my hand as I lower the blade into the jaws. It’s all very solid once it’s in position. The forward spring is turned to the side beyond the fence. I’ll post a picture of it in position for cutting this afternoon.

Great job, but it’s only fast and simple if you have the equipment to do it, lol.

It only takes a cheap, non sliding miter saw, two steel demon blades and a few scraps of wood.

My buddy who is a machinist just used a milling machine. But then he had a milling machine.

I know a guy with a milling machine and had him do some for me once. Worked well. But I have used a bench mount belt sander to do quite a few, because I have one of those and while slower than Marty's setup it works well. I think Marty's setup would be great if you had the equipment. Unfortunately I have a couple skillsaws, a radial arm saw and a table saw, but not the simple chop saw that he uses.
