If Downey & company/FHA can't even manage the opossum trade,
then they stand no chance of setting the market for any other type of wild fur.

I don’t think they control it. Maybe help establish it but there are large dealers like Groenwald and Zander that have their own markets completely independent from FH.

Note - this could be an interesting discussion. Let’s TRY to keep it civil!!

Other than specialty items I say no. Wish we had an auction with some power to keep the country buyers honest. On many items I’d say Groenwold sets the market. But I will say this little uptick in the mink market maybe we owe to FHA.

Itinerant fur buyers pay attention and take note of what prices are paid at the international Fur Auctions and adjust accordingly.
I also believe that FHA takes lots of available information within the trade at any one time from fur buyers(demand) as well as producers(supply) all over the globe to set their valuations.

No, the market demand controls the price.

Beaver prices fell at the FHA auction.Prices paid were adjusted down in the marketplace by country and larger buyers.

The garment prices for beaver were set and were not adjusted downward by FHA.Some prices fell on beaver because the large country buyers and Gronewold had orders which they filled to the hatter/felt buyers. Then the hatter/felt trade prices fell because those buyers were full.

All my beaver sold. The only fur of mine that didnt sell completely are muskrat and coyote.I am fine with if they feel the price isn't high enough they won't sell it.

I know that supply and demand should control the market but at the last FHA auction I was told that FHA raised the level on some goods and held the line because buyers paid strong prices in the March sale.Buyers would not pay it so some items were passed. Not really supply and demand when you try to set the price or hold the line.Country and larger buyers set thier price they will pay based on the auction price they see at FHA.

The fur markets evolved into a novelty trade. Currently there is no “fur market”

Can’t control what does not exist

I call it the trinket trade. I am glad some of you like it. It has little to do with the fur trade.

There are lots of skins going into the garment market.I would say the majority go there. As far as the novelty trade overall its a small piece of the market.
