If you have a dozen traps and a bit over a section of land to trap I would say you have enough traps unless you just want a few more specific traps like dog proof to deal with a good coon population or want to trap out the area in a short time so I would save your money for something else

You said your milking cows twice a day that should give you a couple of hours to check traps between milking times or before that should also be enough to tend a dozen sets every day and you will still likely trap out the population before seasons end

If I was you I might pickup a couple more traps depending on what a survey of your trapping area tells me it holds and just save up the rest for a rainy day

A square mile of farmland can easily be covered on foot and a good bag to hold your catch and gear while tending or moving locations is all you need besides a good pair of boots

@ NorthernTrapperO. You have been given some excellent advice by several individuals.

- You trapped 50 acres with a dozen traps?
- You have 3 dozen more DP traps coming.
- You have 650 acres to trap ===> not every acre is a prime trapping area.
***** Not all 650 acres need to be trapped at the same time. ****
- Divide those 650 acres into 60-80 acres parcels and establish a trap line on each. Scout for the best locations.
Set on sign. Move to a different line/parcel every 1-2 weeks. If you haven't caught something by then, either they or you aren't there.
- You are using a wagon (only works if you have established paths, 2 track, or/and roads. Better is a back pack, pack basket, or ice fishing sled with poly runners. Maybe a combination?
- You need additional traps if pursuing fox, coyote, mink, muskrats.
- As you're under age, firearms are probably out of the question yet; so consider your methods of dispatch for all species ... not to be discussed openly on this forum!
- You need the separate PA Cable Course to use cable restraints.
- You need more trap tags and trap anchors.
- What about trapping clothes ... hip boots, waders, etc.
- Don't give up your day (4x night @===> 18 hr/wk) job to go trapping a few coon and yotes that aren't worth much. You're going to need the income.
- You're hiring someone to skin? Paying by the week rather than by the pelt???
- You have a skinning machine coming for the person skinning your harvest.
- Your parents aren't able to drive you around in your trapping pursuits.

That about sum it up?

We enjoy your enthusiasm, reminds some of us of trapping in our youth; but you need focus, establish goals and priorities to achieve them.

Just set the number of traps you can check and still work. Do your first setting on a day off from school That takes the most time Remakes go faster. Got a feeling you won’t need a wagon this year. But do invest in a trapper basket. Better yet make one out of a 13 gallon trash can. Straps from a climbing stand work perfect

I know before i signed up on here and i was just reading threads there was a kid trapping out of season unless that was an adult, I remember that like yesterday! I was surprised to see someone doing that unless season starts in Ohio over there because he was from ohio

Tiny area to trap,you could trap the whole area out of everything in a week on foot,Go back a month later and trap it again.A few more animals will fill in from other areas if there are no others trapping around your little spot.

Your current plan doesn't require you to quit your job. You will have enough time to trap 650 acres for a couple weeks and still work. If you want to trap enough to where you can quit you will need many more acres to keep you busy. After 2 weeks you will have the cream of the crop caught on the 650 and the rest of the season you will be picking off stragglers every once in a while that would be better off left for seed.

Any rivers or lakes around you big enough to trap on? You should be able to trap 10-15 miles of river in a day with a canoe.

Without a vehicle it will be tough if not impossible to obtain enough ground to keep you busy. I would keep the job and run your 650 acres after work this year. Use your money from your job to get a reliable vehicle and hit it hard next year better prepared.
