Ok first question, what all do you have?

Id recommend some bait solution , a few jars , a bag of those screw in clips for connecting you traps to anchor and stuff. 100' or so of 3/32nd cable 7x7 , few 100 double furrels......and a nice lil pack of some sort

Also since your walking I'd look I to how to build cable restraints for your state and then get some good quality components to makes them.

Hand sanitizer before you eat them. When I was doing my first trapping season dad was checking out my pistol and made a face. Apparently the last few weeks of baiting coon traps with mackerel and still having it on my hands when dispatching left enough on the gun to give it a great smell.

I have no problem eating while butchering a deer but not with trapping hands.

Remember to treat your family. I mentioned this before, but it’s important. Surprise them with something. It will make you feel good.

Are you planing to run a dry and a wet line at the same time? As stated above it appears you are walking this line or all your lines. That means you need carry a couple 5 gallon buckets with or w/o a back pack or find a good cart that can go over uneven ground and carry a decent amount of gear.
Remember you will need to buy a license out of that $500.
I don't know all the regs for PA so trap size regs, season dates etc. I am not familar with. It takes quite a bit of gear to run even a smaller line so don't overload with traps and find you can't buy stakes, drags, chain, wire, spades, skinning equipment etc.If you plan to trap mink and muskrats, 1.5 coils work well and can be used for red fox if you live in the fox area of PA. If you have coyotes then a handul of 2 size traps may be in order. If you are allowed to use 160s on the ground I would get some of those and you can use them for coon, mink and rats. Some types of traps are fairlly easy to find used, and some are not.A few stoploss traps for rats may be good but that would be in my 2nd plan with the things you will need to set, check and run a line and skin and put up fur. If you put up fur you will need fleshing equipment, fleashing beam and boards or wire fur forms. Those are long term investments but can eat up money quickly.

If I were young again and had your situation with minimal experience I would check with the land owner to see if he would allow you to work with a reliable trapper in your area where you could double tag the traps he sets on that property and you can check and reset after you go with him as he sets out the lines with his traps. If he has all the gear you can learn multiple aspects of trapping and work out an how you get paid. Could be cash, could be used gear, percentage of the fur or a combination. You could buy the tags to put on his traps if allowable in your state and save almost all of your $500 to buy later what you have a lot better idea of what you need and want.

Last time I looked, which may have been yesterday, there were some good deals on various LS and 1.5 CS traps on the trap shed forum on T-man. Best deals on the net I know of.

If NTO has not done so, go to utube and check out trapping videos by Dale Billingsly. In particular, how and where to set and setup #1 long springs for coon and others. He may have put that together just for northern trapper.

Recently had to pick up some longer rebar for drowner rods. Local lumber yard. In addition to the longer 10' sections, they had a large pile of shorter bent up sections that could be used for trap stakes. They are almost giving those away. Pile I grabbed easily good for 10 or 15 trap stakes. Weld a nut on the end and good to go.

Put it in your underwear drawer and keep adding to it. You wont make any money trapping. You wont need much to run a small line between work and school. Leave your money in that drawer and scout your set locations. If your going to trap that same 600 acres all season a half dozen #3's and a half dozen 1 1/2's will be plenty. Buy a couple dozen snares. Roll of tie wire, a quart of coyote bait like apple road and a few cans of jack mackerel. Make some stakes by pounding a 5/8 nut on some 1/2" diameter rebar. Should be a welder at a dairy.

Do you belong to your state or a national trapping association? If not, you could join one (or more) and possibly find a mentor. Conventions can be a great place to find deals on equipment, too. If nothing else, go to them and attend all the demos you can.

Being young and inexperienced start with water trapping . Get some 1.5 Duke's and go to dollar store and get some canned sardines for bait

I know you are excited, but I have found it best not to make a purchase until the excitement wears off. Then you come to your senses and purchase what you NEED. You sound like you want to catch every possible animal in your county by some of your posts. The journey is what's fun, not the destination. Buy a few traps, make some sets and learn some lessons. Save half or more of that earned money.

My first trapline was 8 traps set in 8 muskrat huts one Christmas vacation when I was 13. I caught a whopping 6 rats over 8 days. It's one of the best memories of my childhood.
