That's what I'd do. Make your own Trapper.
Cut barrel to length, then file the muzzle off square and crown the barrel. Wouldn't even take the barrel from the action Then, about anyone with a mill can cut you a 3/8th dovetail in the barrel to remount the front sight. I pay $20s at Brownells for a 3/8th dovetail cutter, lasts for several dovetails. Easy job. You might have to file out/enlarge the ring that holds the magazine tube to the barrel. And cut your magazine tube to length.
THEN, go and buy a Williams 5D sight for a Win/Marlin 30-30 and mount on it. Makes a slick tree stand gun. I love my Trapper.

I'll give one my uncle gaveme to you when I die if you want it. Just have to PM address so I can tell my wife and son where you live.

If I were you I would keep searching for a real lever gun or get a HENRY . I have never owned one but hear tell they are fine accurate guns .

I’ve got a marlin, henry and Winchester but all 20” barrels

… appreciate you sharing your experience with the Rossi

similar money gets you in a Henry

if you go with a 45 to match your belt gun you shorten the action a little also

I went with a JM stamped 45/70 cowboy version with octogen barrel, its a longer 24" or something like that I think. I was hoping the length would add some yardage accuracy and I'm glad I did b/c you need the extra weight for the 45/70, its a mule. 45/70 is a straight wall cartridge used by yankees up north b/c its the legal deer rifle. I don't know that you want one but anyway I wouldn't have said anything except mine doesn't have that big cowboy loop on the lever and you really need the extra room or your fingers get all twisted up.

Im not sure how those Rossi's are but mine has a V notch front site and you can change it out with shorter or taller front sites, brass bead, etc...

Oh and be careful with the flip up rear sites. I thought thats what I wanted until I realized that in the down position pointing back is a great way to poke your eye out when the thing goes off if its folded back.

Hopefully that helps some.

The only Rossi I have is the little .410 / .22LR with the 2 separate but interchangeable barrels. It is clunky but gets the job done. If I buy another one it will be the Taurus / Rossi collaboration that is a 5 shot revolver rifle chambered for .410 and .45 Colt. That would be handy in snake and hog country I think.

I have a Rossi lever action 22 and would NOT buy another Rossi. I would spend more and buy a Henry any day over another Rossi. Fit and finish and are just cheaper and dont feel near as good as a new henry or older Marlin or Winchester. With Ruger owning Marlin now - I would be tempted to see what they start making or look at those as well. I personally wont put my money towards another Rossi - just kind of disappointing to me and not one I plan on keeping for a lifetime.

Savell -

Look long and hard at the trapper series 336 Marlin/Ruger - 16 inch barrel in 30/30. I feel it would be much better than a Rossi

250gr +p puts it right there with 44mag

so for fun and yard vermin cowboy loads will do , for deer up to a +p load the Henry will take it

Savell my boys, myself, and a cousin have had great success with 357 mag carbines with 158 gr Hornady xtp and about 16 gr of win 231. Enough deer between us I can't post the probably #s without people bad mouthing it. Also out to ranges that will not be believed and admittedly very questionable energy left at that range. But when you have a range that hits 500 yards out back you play with guns at crazy distance and know the drop.

Basically if you find one in 357 at a good price it will do just fine with the right bullet.
