So all my goodies finally came in and I've been asked a few times to show how I go about "building" my AR's. Now I'm not an expert, think this will be number 4 or 5 for me...but mine also we to work and function pretty well so must b doin something right also could be a great opportunity to get some pointers from some of y'all
Anyhow this is a real budget build think with optics and excluding the relating components were at the $525 mark. Also seems as time goes on and manufacturing gets better , a lot of these cheaper parts are getting better. I test a lot more then I show and honestly I feel like a lot of the new cheap stuff would be on par with a lot of the old mid priced stuff. But that's a discussion for another day ( and one I honestly don't think would go far )
So basic parts 16" bear creek 1:8 mid length gas barrel 9.5" NBS mlok hand gaurd .750 pre assembled mid length gas tube and block Dirty bird thread protector PSA complete lower with MOE furniture AR stoner mag And a Bear creek 7.62x39/6.5 Grendel/ 6mm Arc upper with BCG
So tools ! I got a real avid kit and a nice lil vice
So to be honest since I never really do much past building uppers I don't use a good 80% of this MOST IF THE TIME. I've used a lot of these but most of what I use are the action bar , wrench and torque wrench
So to build the upper , gonna slap my action part in my vice
Slide my bole carrier group out then slide my receiver on just to hold it while I grease the barrel but threads. As far as grease now I use areoshell. This the mil spec stuff the that's universally agreed to be the standard. Lil goes a long way and think this tin was like $6 ? Anyway I put some on the threads then thread the barrel but in and off a few times to make sure there's a decent lil coating
Ok so next thing I do is.... debated , it's greased the barrel extension. Some say you need to some say it don't do anything heck some people bed this with anything from a thermal fit involving high heat , a freezer and some paint ....all I know it it's a pain to take off barrel that haven't had any one and they get rusted in, so I lightly brush a lil layer on. If there was a lot of play and slop then yeah if probably do something different but this was pretty Nice fit wise And just like this lil nipple up with that notch in the upper and push it in
Now just slip on the barrel nut over the barrel and down to the threads on hand tighten it
And now this is where the armors wrench comes into play . The rea avid is a bit weird looking but works good. So slap the puppy on
Then the torque wrench
Now most of the nicer handgaurd will come with torque specs ....but a lot don't, that bend said 30-45lbs is a pretty agreed upon thing so And that's kinda the hard part . Well it can be much more of a pain depending on the barrel nut. Ok gas tube. Not running suppressed or anything sho just running a standard deal..barrel specs say it's a mid length gas system with a .750 gas block deal ..so I ordered a set up with a mid length gas tube and .750 gas block ....pretty simple
So just since that sucker on, and most of these barrel now days have a divit on the bottom opposite of the gas port.which basically make it idiot proof when it comes to lining stuff up Put the end though that lil hole in the upper bump the gas block flush and tighten the Allen keys down
Now the handgaurd ! Now some are simple some are complicated as far as how they attached. Mines pretty simple , has two bont on the back said that act like a hose clamp around the barrel nut. So loosen those up slip it on and over get everything firring pretty even and flush and tighten those two down And boom Now this hand gaurd is a lil short and the gas block does sit out a bit but idk I like this look a bit !
Ok so now the muzzle. Where hUr running a tread protector. Usually use a little blue lockite but all I had was red so. Just a little of that and screw it on tight. If this thing states moving it will end up acting like a tuner possibly and tat could lead to different impact from (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) to shot And just like that we got an upper ! Next I added some.mlock pic rails under ned for dads grip he wanted . And his scope. Where runing a 2-10 LPVO And theyye go ! Also wend ad added some KAW Valley trigger springs to drop the weight down a bit and if course had to give her that ole razzle dazzle with the spray cans. Dad seemed a bit scared of me painted it but since he's always drooling over the ons I've done for myself
Ok eveyone back from the range aaaannnnnnd yeah about what I expected. 1.really need to spend some time being this gun 2. Definitely need to hand load because this factory stuff is pretty slow 3.did loves the fit, but I really need a cheek riser 4. Need more practice shooting off of hard surfaces lol
So anyway took he out today just to do a function test really and to see what it shooting like. No one was there so was able to shoot prone of a bipod and bag ( my favorite since 80% of benchs are too tall for me )
So shooting the factory horny precision hunter ammo with a 103 gr ELDX. Went and used factory first so I know it's not my reloads causing any possible problems. And decided to try and shoot with the 2-10 LPVO who's reticle is , I feel great for hunting but not the best for shooting groups But anyway first shot showed everything looking good. Was a singer round fed from the mag , fed , chambered and ejected with no problems, and our ejection . Pretty cool pic right ? And our 50yd target ( every else was mag fed) And that's a 1" sticky. But 50yd....is a chip shot honestly , out to 100yd And for those wondering this is about what I'm seeing though my scope, and it's not as nice as I see it because my phone camera couldn't really focus just right but you get the picture, Now with this I did three five round groups and I was trying to adjust on to target in-between both. Went from the first three thigh the first five let it cool then the next five Now theri not pretty but first 20 out of a new gun and I kinda suck ....eghhhhh regardless kept under at and under 2" and its definitely a solid 1.5" gun. Gimme another 30-50 think I can get it down to an inch or less Now one thing that comes up a lot is me having my magneto speed attached to the barrel possibly messing with stuff. So took it off for the last group and ...well about the same really
And velocity...yeahhhh this lil 16" just isn't what this ammo is optional for. 6mm arc is more of a 18" gun type of thing but egh, there guys running 12.5"'s right now and living it so who knows Will say though tish is some of the most consistent factory ammo I've ever shot
Now I will say I think this factory stuff is a bit on the higher pressure side . No ejector swipes buuut
And if you watch the video you'll probably guess where this happened
So yeah that's the first few shots and here the video
Alrighty eveyone so.....think I found a load lol. Honestly was just hunting velocity since these are hunting rounds. All I was caring about was finding the velocity I needed and I'd work from there . And with the grass being so high , and the range being a lil drive I said screw it I'll just run the tripod with the magno speed. Well got all the way to close to max and noticed the group was looking too bad so said why not and went and loaded up five more of that chare and well.... Now I'm (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) off of a tripod with a LPVO so I threw two of these out but even with them included still within what I'd know dad would be happy with And velocity was decent
Yep.just takes a tiny bit of work lol. Now I wish this barrel had a bit of a longer throat because there serrias need to be seated alot deeper compared to the slicker longer Hornady's As you see plenty more room in the mag But with how deep these need to sit and the powder capacity
