Does anyone else like shooting Sporting Clays and/or Skeet(the actual game)?
Last year, I decided I wanted to get back into a shooting sport and I always liked clay bird shooting. I went to a couple of the sporting clay courses around the area and rented a few different O/U before I purchased the one I liked and fitted me the best.
I really like shooting sporting clays. My wife goes and she is my official button pusher. We bring the shotgun on our travels. I have shot the course at Shanes in Summerville NC, Iron Mountain in Sevierville, Tn, Leigh Valley Sporting Clays in Allentown Pa, Stonewall Jackson in WV and all the courses at Airport Ridge in Millersburg, Oh. It is a pretty expensive hobby but it a great way to spend the day.
I recently joined a club in Marietta Ohio that has a sporting clays course and a skeet course. When I was at Camp Lejeune we would shoot the course there and I forgot how much I liked it. The club is so much cheaper and its nice to find a friendly place to shoot. Some of the members have really helped me out by giving me advice on my shooting. Its nice that I can use the facility at anytime and shoot whenever I want. When my wife says that she would like to have pizza for dinner, that is code for she wants to go Doughboys for dinner and a milkshake and I can go shoot.
I like the skeet course and I am getting better. I am getting close to a perfect round but I either drop a #3 high house or a #5 high house, sometimes both. Same with sporting clays, I like the challenge and sometimes will shoot the super sporting course. It is humbling but is fun and that is what it is about.
When I can get in a group shooting 5 stand, I really like that. I don't shoot it much but when I do, it is fun.

I've got the 25, 50 and 75 straight patches in skeet. Never could put 4 clean rounds together. Always prefered sporting clays over skeet though. It's probably been 10 years since I last shot. See if any of the clubs in your area have 'fun shoots'. Like a tournament, but you get slotted based on your handicap and can usually take home some decents give aways.

If you plan to shoot more, and haven't done so, consider reloading. I haven't looks at materials pricing in years, but I could do it for around $1.50 / box cheaper when I shot a lot.

I am a regular at Stonewall as it is only about 20 minutes from my house. I have shot several of the ones you have mentioned and really like Airport Ridge and Lehigh Valley. I have yet to make it to Iron Mountain, but plan to go later this year or next spring. One to add is Coal Ridge in Weirton WV, its a relatively new course and has some cool presentations. It can definitely get expensive, but it seems like about everything is expensive any more. I'm not a big fan of a 5 stand, but it is great in inclimate weather and we have a winter league at Stonewall in the 5 stand Mid Dec through March which i like because it keeps me active when I would have tendency to hibernate

I could probably easily get into other shotgun games , just time and money and my sons big interest is USPSA pistol.

I do spend a lot of my time in the fall chasing ditch chickens and I sure like that.

@Gary, We are heading to Coal Ridge on Friday. I am excited to try it and we just like to go places. I live in Ravenswood area and nothing is close.

I @Gunnlg, I have looked into reloading and I need to do this, mainly for consistency of the shot.

I have been shooting sporting clays for 30 some years. Still reload but the cost savings aren't as good as they used to be. 28 ga is most cost effective to reload, and shoot lol.

Buffer Creek is a decent course in Pa. It is older. Will Brendel one of the owners is who sets the targets for the WV state shoot every year. Buffer Creek is not as fancy as a lot of the others, but has some challenging targets.

I reload 410. With the current price of components and time involved, I could not get the economics to work for 12 gauge. Very few if any of the targets I have ever missed in 30000+ rounds I cannot blame on ammo

I rabbit hunt with a 28 ga and like it but I dont shoot it but a few times a year, I think a box will last 4 years. I dont shoot much, I like to listen to my dogs.

That is what I like about Shanes in NC, it is the oldest sporting clays in NC, the course is fun and challenging, nothing fancy.
