we had a 88 S-10 that had a bad slave cylinder it did some strange stuff some days work just fine other days you had to push fast , get out of gear then let off the clutch while at the light , then when the light changed quick push in the clutch and get it in first
seals can do different things different days , temp , pressure , moon cycle or what ever else effects them
it was really weird how it was , like yup need to replace this , then oh , hey today it seems fine.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Stick your head up inside the clutch well. You will find a crack. Had it happen to a 98 taco.

Shift it into high gear on a fairly steep incline at 30 mph then floor it. If the engine revs and the speed doesn't increase you definitely have a slave / clutch issue.

I'm having a weird problem with my 2000 Tacoma. It's a manual five speed. Sometimes when I depress the clutch, the clutch pedal stays on the floor. I can pull it back up with the toe of my shoe, but when I depress it again, it falls flat on the floor. I cannot engage the clutch, so I have to start it while in first gear to get it going, then shift without the use of the clutch. I'll let it sit over night, and it works fine the next day. This happens about once every couple of months, and has been going on for a couple of years. Any guesses as to what the problem is? Piston failed?

Slave cylinder is going bad. Same issues with a 96 ranger. Any oil leaks under the truck Or is it just bypassing ? No leaks, and that's saying something for the old girl with 726,000+ miles on her. Did your Ranger do it intermittently also? If my tacoma lasts that long, I'll be about 110 years old :-)
