Curious what y'all got.

My oldest girl's car broke down about two and a half miles from the house last night. Her and her husband pushed it off the road into a parking lot. They contacted the local PD to let them know it was broke down and they would be back this morning to get it up and running or towed home. The PD said that it couldn't be towed for 24 hours.
Less than 12 hours later they return to find that it had been towed by the property owner, a local diner.

Back home in Alabama when I worked security we couldn't hook them until 48 hours had passed after posting attempt to notify the owner via a sticker or card under the wiper.

I stopped to check out the lot and the signage for towing isn't up to Georgia code which is to be at the primary entrance. This one has two entrances but a single sign at the far backend.

I don't understand why an owner can't go get his/her inoperable vehicle anytime they want to.

I would think nobody can have your car towed for the first 24 hours, but you the owner can.

If left unattended on private property. The property owner or his/her designee can have towed at their discretion

No clue what the law is there but you could easy find out. If the tow was illegal you could sue in small claims court to get the tow bill and storage recouped. Get a transcript of your phone call to LE.

The 24 hour rule is if its sitting along the side of the public highway. If left on private property, the land ownwer can have it towed whenever they want.

To my knowledge here, the owner can tow whenever, but the law enforcement has to put their sticker on it before it can be towed by someone else.

As long as the vehicle wasn't disrupting others, I'd say the parking lot owner is a "Karen"

A friend of mine went to Texas for work in mid June. He lent his car to his Tweeker sister in Washington. She promptly got the car towed. He just found out it was towed and impounded a couple days after he lent it to her. She never made an attempt to get it out of impound. The State sets the tow and impound storage rate.
The tow company will auction it off on August 5 unless he pays the fees that have accrude. As of four days ago it amounted to $3,618.00, and is continuing to increase at nearly $100 a day.
Hard lesson learned.

I assume the PD meant the lot owner couldn't tow it for 24hrs?

Hard lesson learned.

A friend of mine had something similar happen to a van they owned. Luckily he found out before the impound fees got excessive.
Crazy how someone could borrow something like that and not tell the owner their property is in peril.

She also ran up a few hundred dollars in toll lane fees that he is now responsible for.
Don't lend things to tweekers.

Hard lesson learned, at least he knows exactly what kind of person his sister is, and the cost of a relationship with her.

Pretty sure no one has to “give” you any amount of time to get something off their property if you put it there. Now if they’d gone in and asked the owners if it was ok, and they agreed and still had it towed then that’s just being a jerk. Private property is private property. It would be like someone just using your driveway for a day without your consent. They’d probably have been better off leaving it on the side of the road.

Let a broke down car set 6 wks on my property before having it towed...Then only because the railroad needed to get some equipment in there.

No idea what the law says but if the car was only there overnight that is a CS move by the diner

Now if it was left for days or was in the way I would have had it towed
