ground up crawdads are my favorite coon bait. Hard to seine them in cold weather. Since Mom dont want froze stuff in her her food locker, the jack mackeral is a fine plan. Buy a can or two as you are able. Its a great coon bait and cheap. This is probably the best response here. Start stocking up now and you'll have plenty by the time season opens.

You will catch as many on canned jack mackerel.

salt is a preservative you can add flour to canned tuna, sardines or mackeral to go stretch it out a little further also liquid smoke or/ and anise oil can be added or used as lure both bought at the grocery store or general dollar

Don't overthink coon baits. They'll eat anything.
I've caught a ton of them off the cheapest canned and dry catfood the dollar store has.
Heck I've even reached into a customer's trash can and tossed chickens bones or pizza crusts in the back of cages. i set traps by a river with dps and the coons knocked over my dps but they didnt want the dry catfood, no clue why

what if i used sodium benzonite on the crawdads? I don't know how he Mark preserved them, but they were a brown color. They also had a fair amount of golden brown juice in them. Strong crawfish smell when you opened the jar.

You can alternately salt your fresh fish. Catch the fish. If using something like carp, either chunk it up, or grind it. Put a layer of fish in a 5 gallon bucket, then a layer of salt. Layer of fish, layer of salt until you run out of fish. When I say a layer of salt, I mean like an inch thick layer, not just a sprinkling. Put the lid on the bucket. Your fish will keep and will work fine in your pocket sets. Salt can be had at Tractor Supply for under $10 for a 50lb sack. This also works well for coon. Be forewarned, this us rough on DPs due to the salt.

Any fish will work as bait. Don't get caught up in the, it has to be this bait or that bait. Use what is available to you. Sardines, Jack Mack, tuna, canned salmon, blue gills, crappie, shad, walleye heads, suckers, carp, and bass etc. will all work just fine. Frogs, crawdads, creek chubs, and shrimp and lobster leftovers work well also.
I had some outdated canned salmon given to me. It worked fine, although I wouldn't buy it but free was good.

Canned sardines and jack mackerel are cheap off the shelf fish.[/quote]
If fish aren’t allowed in the freezer, (roll eyes), canned sardines are probably not allowed in the pantry.
