I ordered a bunch of plants yesterday.

Is anyone else getting some late season plants or plants this Fall?

VA Dept of Forrestry has a yearly tree sale each year for Jan - Mar plantings. Hard and soft mast trees as well as a multitude of fruit. I’ll put in 25 or so each year, mainly filling any gaps in my cutovers with hard mast trees. Have slowly built few crab apple and pear orchards over the last 5 years and pockets of red / white / swamp and saw oaks as well as chestnuts.

All for wildlife obviously.

Is the place you order from just for wholesalers or something or can anyone order from there? If the latter, can you either post who it was or PM it to me?

I have an order in for some chestnuts, mayhaws, and plums.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

I bought them from Hartmann's Plant Company in Michigan.

https://hartmannsplantcompany.com/wholesale/

They will sell at wholesale prices if you buy the amounts required. I believe you can buy smaller amounts too.

I talked to Dan Hatrmann a month or so ago. He seemed like a great guy. I gave him 6 rooted cuttings of the elderberry variety I discovered and named Remembrance (thanks Carl) and an Amorphophallus konjac. He very generously gave me two 38 plug trays of haskaps, plus a few more.

Hartmann's seem like a good company. The reviews I've seen of them have been good, better than most of the other nurseries. The plants they sent me were great. I hope and think they will do well this time too.

They specialize in plugs of a fair number of useful plants.

The Fraises Des Boise strawberries I ordered from them are according to many sources the best flavored strawberries in existence.

Their plants are cheap enough that you can purchase them, re-pot them, grow them out and sell them for a decent profit. Most nurseries buy plant plugs and do that.

Haskaps are getting a lot of buzz lately. They are also called honeyberries. Supposedly most US grocery stores will sell fresh honeyberries in the next few years. Some grocery stores now sell frozen and dried honeyberries.

I've never tasted any yet. They are supposed to taste somewhere between a blueberry and a raspberry. The new selected varieties are supposed to taste better than both.

You're welcome. They have 8 varieties of Haskaps. You need at least 2 varieties, that flower at the same time, to get good fruit set.

Each individual plug is 2.38 inches deep and round with a 2.25 inch diameter.

Here's the stats for the whole 38 plug tray.

"Product code 38PS
Cell shape Round
Configuration 3 x 8 / 2 x 7
Outside dimensions (inches) 10.42 x 20.85
Depth (inches) 2.38
Cell top diameter (inches) 2.25
Cell max dry volume (cubic inches) 6.80
Drain hole Burned
Pieces per carton 100
Cartons per pallet 32
Manufacturing Type Thermoformed"

I asked Hartmann's about planting the plugs when I got the first ones. They said the plugs could go straight in the ground if the ground was well prepped. They said if the ground was very weedy, that it would be better to re-pot the plants in larger pots or put them in a prepared bed and move them later so they could compete.

The plants I received were well rooted and strong.

Keith
