My Grandad grew up in WV. He could hear a squirrel cutting' a nut better than anyone I ever saw and he could skin one I think in under a minute. Grandad's brother, Uncle George told me a story that Grandad would never admit to. He said when they were kids they sold rosebud salve until they got a 22 single shot which they hid in a hollow tree down over the hill from the one room schoolhouse. Apparently some of the morning hunts went too long to make it to class. Eventually they got caught.

I can shuck one in under a minute, not counting gutting the rascal.
There’s a fraction of the squirrel hunters there were when I was a kid.
On a Saturday morning during hickory nut time back then you would hear guns going off in the distance. Not anymore.

It's funny you posted this today, as yesterday I picked up the first squirrel chewed hickory nut and showed it to drifter. Squirrels cutting hickories.... here now... is the earliest sign of fall.

Here, season doesn't open until Oct. 1st and by then there's nothing left but acorns.

But when I lived in NY, squirrels weren't in the hickories until the last week of August, and season opened on the first of September. Every first, I'd be up under a hickory tree.

Proudly banned from the NTA.

Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Squirrels cutting hickory’s is what signifies the beginning of fall for me.
Son in law and grandson will be here in a few minutes. Going to collect some rent on my hickory trees this morning lol.

They are little spotty.
Certainly not a tremendously heavy crop of hickory.
Here, all trees have a few. Not many are loaded down.

Incorrect Bob.
Our season opens late May (Memorial Day weekend)
It does run thru February 15th.
Slightly more than 8 1/2 months.

I took the grandson this morning. He was the trigger man. He killed 7. Saw more than enough to have killed 10. He’s still learning, but he does good for his age.
Son in law killed his 10.
Having trouble getting pictures to go on here. Comes back and says they’re too big or something.
I despise technology, especially when it doesn’t work!!

As a kid dad and I would pair up when they were in the hickories.

He had left part of his hearing on the range at Ft Benning and I was already in glasses. I could hear them cutting nuts and he could spot them when pointed in the right direction.

A story from my young and dumb youth.

There was a nice stand hickories at a bend of the creek back of the house. The creek bent due to hitting a high bluff, the stand was between the creek and the bluff. To hunt this spot meant pretty much sitting at the base of the trees and shooting straight up into the tree tops.
Then I got a bright idea, why not hunt from the top of the bluff and be at eye level with the squirrels.

Sounded good at the moment until that first squirrel fell out, lol.

KY coyote, we do have a mighty long season. Missouri is 93 percent private land. In my opinion, squirrel hunting with all this private land could be open year around. We dang near are now. There must be states with a lot more squirrel hunters left than here with the fall only seasons and small limits.

It's been cool almost feels cold the last few mornings after the heat of summer. Definitely getting the it's time to squirle hunt feeling in the mornings. comes in on the 15th here. I have to work unfortunately but I my wife was talking about taking the boys to one of the big state forest to hunt them opening day. She plans to sit in the van and wait. They could hunt them on the farm but like the fun of hunting more area guessing they got that from me.

I sure did win the loto with my amazing wife.
