My Grandad grew up in WV. He could hear a squirrel cutting' a nut better than anyone I ever saw and he could skin one I think in under a minute. Grandad's brother, Uncle George told me a story that Grandad would never admit to. He said when they were kids they sold rosebud salve until they got a 22 single shot which they hid in a hollow tree down over the hill from the one room schoolhouse. Apparently some of the morning hunts went too long to make it to class. Eventually they got caught. I can shuck one in under a minute, not counting gutting the rascal. There’s a fraction of the squirrel hunters there were when I was a kid. On a Saturday morning during hickory nut time back then you would hear guns going off in the distance. Not anymore.

It's funny you posted this today, as yesterday I picked up the first squirrel chewed hickory nut and showed it to drifter. Squirrels cutting hickories.... here now... is the earliest sign of fall.
Here, season doesn't open until Oct. 1st and by then there's nothing left but acorns.
But when I lived in NY, squirrels weren't in the hickories until the last week of August, and season opened on the first of September. Every first, I'd be up under a hickory tree.
Proudly banned from the NTA.
Bother me tomorrow. Today I'll buy no sorrows.

Squirrels cutting hickory’s is what signifies the beginning of fall for me. Son in law and grandson will be here in a few minutes. Going to collect some rent on my hickory trees this morning lol.

Clay are the hickory spotty this year?? I haven't had time to look but I have one in the yard that is usually always full but as I mowed this morning didn't see any.. They are little spotty. Certainly not a tremendously heavy crop of hickory. Here, all trees have a few. Not many are loaded down.

Looking good, and I envy that 10 squirrel limit! AND, It runs from end of Jul to middle of Feb! About 7 months.
